Options for earning money for a student
Despite the belief that students should use their years of study solely to gain knowledge, most modern students are looking for ways to earn extra money. Some of them have no opportunity to support their parents and pay for their studies, others themselves strive for independence: they want to live separately and have their own money.
And they are right: many parents deny their children their own opinion, even if they are no longer children, but still live at their parents’ expense, in accordance with the saying: “He who pays the piper calls the tune.”
But it’s not easy for students to find a job, because they don’t have work experience, which means they don’t have much choice. They have no right to dictate terms, and the time they can allocate for work is limited. Trying to sit on two chairs at once, giving your all at work and school and trying not to fall out of both, can cause stress and depression.
Where can students find income that allows them to combine work with study?
Working as waiters
Most often, students work as waiters, baristas, auxiliary workers (preparing food for cooking - cleaning, cutting), dishwashers in all kinds of cafes, restaurants, bakeries, pizzerias, etc.
Job search sites offer them flexible work hours. The main requirements for applicants are secondary education, activity, decency, and non-conflict.
During the summer holidays, students can sign a contract and work as waiters abroad - in Greece, Australia, Germany, Canada, the UAE, etc., where the pay is many times higher. For example, a summer salary as a waiter in a coffee shop or a candy store in Dubai will allow a student to rent an apartment and live comfortably all year, devoting time only to study. Of course, without knowing English at a conversational level, you won’t be able to get this job.
By the way, some employers prefer to hire students and place vacancy announcements on notice boards near dean’s offices.
How and where can a student look for a job?
Also, you need to try to make more acquaintances, since each acquaintance may have another acquaintance who would have a part-time job for you. Try to participate in various active events, competitions, or, more simply, in student life. More acquaintances means a greater chance of a better offer.
Remember that you can find work absolutely anywhere, even in areas that you never thought of as a permanent job. From catering and call centers to real estate sales assistants.

How I found my first job
So, for example, I found a job through a girl I knew through correspondence at the Drama Theater. Purely by chance, I told her that I was looking for a job, and she told me about hers and offered me one, since they didn’t have enough people. They never made any announcements, and due to the fact that the work is very good, the staff was always recruited through acquaintances.
So you can say that I was lucky. I could never imagine myself in this field, but they offered good money and a very flexible schedule (during performances), which is extremely important for us students. Another advantage of this job was that the theater was not very far from my house. This is very convenient, and if you live in the city center, I advise you to look for work there, and not on the outskirts. You will save time and money on travel.
How to explain to your boss that you need an individual schedule
Finding a job now is easier than it might seem. Don’t think that your boss won’t like that you’re studying and will sometimes ask for time off. The main thing for him is to see in you the desire to work, study and discipline yourself, which, by the way, will help you in the future, not to mention the experience and skills acquired in the workplace. Therefore, if you live in the central part of the city, then I can say for sure that there are simply a lot of open and convenient vacancies around you with decent money.
Sociable students are willingly hired as promoter-consultants
The essence of their work is advertising of goods, promoting the promotion of goods or services on the market. This includes distributing samples and flyers, participating in promotions and exhibitions, organizing surveys, participating in product tastings, etc.
The main requirement for an applicant is cultural communication skills, goodwill, a good memory that allows you to remember a lot of new information, literacy, the ability to quickly find a way out of possible conflict situations, and, of course, attractive appearance. Working hours are usually 3-4 hours a day.
The amount of earnings depends on several factors: the type of work performed, the number of attracted consumers. Work in the evening or at night is paid higher. Boys and girls with a presentable appearance earn more as they represent the “face” of the company.
Work as merchandisers
Many students work part-time as merchandisers, who arrange goods on shelves in stores and supermarkets, control price tags, and as supervisors, intermediaries between employees and management. A team of promoters is usually subordinate to the supervisor. The work of a supervisor requires certain professional skills, so the requirements for applicants are more stringent, and it is more suitable for students - future managers and economists.
The main requirements are communication skills and stress resistance. Some students prefer to manage their free time independently and depend only on themselves, so they are looking for other options for earning money. For example:
Directions
Each region independently sets discounts for students on public transport; in some cities there may be no transport benefits at all. If you do not live in Moscow (because we will talk about the capital's benefits below), ask about discounts at your educational institution.
City transport in Moscow
The Moscow metro and ground transport offer benefits for students - but only for those who study full-time at accredited educational institutions in Moscow. To get a discount, you need to apply for a social “Muscovite Card” on the Mos.ru portal or in.
Advice. Using the “Muscovite Card” you can get discounts at 7.5 thousand stores and establishments. It is convenient to track them on the map on the Mos.ru website. Near the cash registers at these establishments there are usually stickers with information about student card discounts, but just in case, you can check the availability of preferential prices - even if there are no stickers.
A monthly unlimited subscription for travel on the metro, monorail, MCC and MCD (Central zone) for students costs 405 ₽. For unlimited travel on ground transport, you need to pay an additional 265 ₽ (for comparison: unlimited travel on the metro and buses with a Troika card without benefits costs 2,170 ₽ per month).
Suburban transport in Moscow
Students can get a 50% discount on train travel. The benefit is valid from September 1 to June 15. To do this, you need to present your student card at the ticket office when paying for travel.
Russian Railways
Full-time students can receive a 25% discount on compartment tickets (on any trains in Russia) and seats on the high-speed trains Strizh, Lastochka, and Nevsky Express. To receive a discount, you need to register in the Russian Railways Bonus loyalty program and send through your personal account a certificate on the letterhead of the educational institution confirming the fact of study (such a certificate can be obtained from the dean’s office).
Aircraft
The state provides discounts on flights for Russians under 23 years of age. But this program has limitations: the subsidy is provided mainly for “unpopular” routes for residents of the Far East, North-West, Siberia and Crimea - for example, Anadyr - Moscow, Blagoveshchensk - Vladivostok, Magadan - Krasnodar. A list of destinations, airlines and maximum prices for discounted tickets is available on the website of the Federal Air Transport Agency.
You can issue a subsidized ticket on the website or at the call center of the airline that provides discounted flights. The number of discount tickets on each flight is limited.

Translation of texts
They retype or translate texts, provide services for writing essays, laboratory, tests and coursework, practice reports, diplomas on given topics. In addition, they sell their own works several times to students of other courses, faculties and universities, who for some reason cannot or do not want to write them themselves.
Finding clients with the Internet is not difficult - it is important to earn a good reputation, and for this you need to know the subject well and express your thoughts coherently. Teachers should have no complaints about the student’s work, and the customer should have no complaints about its author. Otherwise there will be no clientele.
Competently done work pays well, but not every job seeker will agree to it, because it requires painstakingness, perseverance and knowledge. Students who know how to draw, sketch, and solve problems can also easily earn money from this.
The Internet also provides other options for earning money.
Is it difficult to combine work and study as a full-time student?
McDonald's pays by the hour
I think many people have encountered this problem. Most young people simply think that “it’s hard to juggle,” “I’ll get worse at school,” or “nobody needs student workers,” but in reality this is not the case.
According to VTsIOM, about 60% of full-time students combine work and study, and 67% of people have a positive attitude towards the fact that university students combine study with work.
So think about why you are bad enough to do the same. There is no need to be afraid to contact people. My classmate always comes up with different excuses and can’t even call the employer to find out general information. This will lead to nothing and he will remain in search.
And you can call anywhere, even places that don’t advertise for workers, and ask them if they need someone. Part-time work for students with daily pay can be found quickly if you want it. After all, even working as a janitor in front of classes for half an hour to one, you can already receive a good increase in your scholarship and at the same time remain completely free for the rest of the day. Nothing bad will happen if they refuse you and tell you that they don't need anyone or that you are not suitable for them.
If at first it doesn’t work offline, you can try looking for part-time work online. On the Internet you can earn from 200 to 500 rubles a day without having any special skills. Plus, you get your first real work experience. You do a task and get paid for it. This will help you overcome your fear of employment in the future.
Writing and selling articles
You just need to be able to write beautifully and register on one of the exchanges chosen depending on your preferences and abilities.
Beginners in rewriting and copywriting should start with the Etxt.ru copywriting exchange. The site has loyal moderators, offers simple navigation and good earnings, depending on the rating. Here you can carry out orders for money, you just need to submit your proposal and wait for the message that we have been appointed as a contractor. On the same site you can put up for sale any of your photographs that, in our opinion, turned out to be successful.
Another popular exchange where you can earn money by copywriting, rewriting, fulfilling orders, or putting your own articles up for sale is Text.ru.
The Advego exchange provides ample opportunities for making money on the Internet. The Copylancer.ru exchange is for those who, as they say, have already eaten the dog on copyright and write almost perfectly, without spelling, grammatical and stylistic errors.
Perhaps someone will be satisfied with the conditions offered by the Textsale.ru exchange, where earnings depend on the rating: one point is awarded for each purchased article, a high rating ensures greater popularity, which means that as the rating increases, articles will be sold at a higher price. More details about registration, payment principles and order fulfillment can be found directly on the sites themselves.
Earning money from photo banks
Students interested in photography can make money by selling their own photographs. Thanks to modern photographic equipment, even non-professionals can take pretty decent photographs. The main thing is that they are unique and do not “shine” anywhere else. Photos can be sold on special websites, in photo banks - Dreamstime.com (beginners should start there), Depositphotos.com (you can also put up videos for sale here, but the requirements for applicants are more stringent). And, of course, Shutterstock.com. Successful photos from your smartphone can be “attached” to a photo bank thanks to the free Clashot application.
