Closed a fish breeding enterprise due to problems with product distribution channels

I have been breeding fish for more than 15 years, I can hardly remember all the subtleties and details of how I started, but I will try to tell you something useful. Now I have a sturgeon farm. I breed at UVZ, productivity 3 tons. Net profit is approximately 100-200 thousand rubles. I can't say enough good things about this business. Large players are increasingly crowding out small businesses every year. Every year the number of potential customers decreases because competitors offer more favorable conditions and a better price. Of course, this is much more difficult for small businesses to do. At the moment I am negotiating the sale of my enterprise, because I am sure that in 5-7 years the enterprise will become unprofitable. I see more joyful prospects for myself in other niches, so I want to finish with fish farming.

The advice I can give to those who want to get involved in this topic is to look for who and how to sell their products. The most ideal option, in my opinion, is to find a partner who is going to open his own fish store. It would be a very good collaboration. Even better, of course, is to open a fish breeding enterprise and a fish store yourself. As a result, you will not need to search for distribution channels. Roughly speaking, solve the most important problem of this niche. Another question is that to organize fish farming on a large scale you will need at least 2-3 million rubles. To create a store you will need about the same amount. As a result, we have 4-6 million investments, which may not pay off at all if there are no customers in the store.

The best option would be to open a store and only after you are sure that you will have regular customers, should you open a fish breeding enterprise.

For those who are going to make money only from fish farming, I can only wish them good luck in finding distribution channels. This was not easy to do in 2020, and it will be even more difficult in 2020 and in the future.

Lost 93,000 rubles due to a mistake when purchasing equipment for fish farming

I want to tell you about the mistakes I made and lost 93,000 rubles from scratch when breeding fish. This amount may seem small to some, but at the time of creating the business this amount was a fortune for me. At some point, I got the idea of starting my own business for breeding aquarium fish. The business plan I drew up assumed that I would spend about 300,000 rubles on this business, and the net profit should have been about 40,00 rubles. Of course, taking into account the fact that I will be the only employee.

The first problem was purchasing equipment. It was expensive, but it seemed to me that I was able to skillfully solve this issue; I purchased used equipment on Avito and spent 200,000 rubles on everything.

All equipment:

  • Aquarium
  • Compressor
  • Filter
  • Daylight lamp
  • Thermostat
  • Automatic feeder
  • Thermometer

I put it in my garage and began searching for a room to accommodate it. I didn’t need any cool premises, everything was minimal and as cheap as possible. An excellent option was a small premises for 20,000 rubles per month on the outskirts of the city. I brought the equipment there, installed everything myself, launched the fish and thought that in a few months I would be able to quit my main job and plunge headlong into my business.

Trouble awaited me two months later. I was slowly looking for pet stores to which I could sell my fish, but when I opened the doors of my small business, I realized that I had no one else to sell to. All the fish died. A used thermostat that I bought cheaper just broke and cooked all my fish. First of all, I felt sorry for the dead fish, which will now never end up in home aquariums. And secondly, I began to count how much I lost on this: Thermostat - 3,000 rubles, fish - 50,000 rubles, rent for two months - 40,000 rubles. In total, I lost 93,000 rubles. — for me it was a lot of money and I had to think about what to do next. Either close the business or get a loan.

I liked my small business, so I didn’t close it, I decided to take out a loan for 100,000 rubles. This time I bought a normal thermostat and my fish never died again.

The conclusion I drew from this is that you shouldn’t skimp on everything. Yes, you can save on normal premises and employees, but it was not worth saving on equipment. Now my business is growing and developing, I have not yet left my main job, since the net profit at the moment is only 30,000 rubles per month. But I am gradually expanding it and finding pet stores that need my fish.
