One of the first questions that immediately arises is: why register a nursery at all?
Cattery registration is necessary for those breeders who want to raise kittens at the highest quality level.
First of all, registering a nursery is necessary for those breeders who not only want to raise kittens, but do it at the highest quality level and have their own, so to speak, brand for this, or, if you like, a “trademark”. If we call things in terms of felinological language, then it is necessary for the breeder to receive a factory prefix. What can official registration give a breeder? The most important thing is that the factory prefix protects the breeder’s good name from the fact that it will be used by all kinds of businessmen from pseudofelinology for the purpose of profit or, even worse, for the purpose of forgery. Depending on the level of this registration (international, Russian, club), the breeder will also have the level of protection of his name.
As for club registration, it protects the name only within a specific club.
However, before starting to register a nursery, the future breeder must answer the most important question for himself - why he needs this. If all he strives for is simply to breed his cat from time to time for health purposes, then the question arises, why then waste time on completing the appropriate documentation?
In addition, mating cats “for health” is one of the persistent myths according to which cats simply need to periodically engage in sexual relations. However, this myth has nothing to do with reality. As the experience of breeders shows, animals that are not castrated or sterilized lose their appearance much faster, age faster and die faster, while castrated and sterilized animals have better health, are more playful and mentally balanced. So, if a potential breeder decided to breed his cat, being driven solely by concern for the health of his pet, then it would be much more reasonable to spend some money on spaying or neutering the animal, and remove this problem once and for all, and at the same time make it easier for your pet ( and himself) life, adding another couple of years to his already not too long life.
If a potential breeder decides to breed his female cat solely for health reasons, then it would be much wiser to have the animal spayed or neutered.
But, if a person is truly involved in the breeding of cats and becomes incurably ill with this complex but fascinating business, cannot imagine his life without the squeaking of kittens and the selection of the most suitable pair, exhibitions and assessments, then there is only one way for him - to join the motley ranks of professional breeders.
On this path, the breeder will have to overcome many obstacles and solve more than one puzzle, but this work can bring him extraordinary joy - the joy of seeing more and more perfect animals, the creator of which he himself will be!
Why open a nursery?
Signs of a good nursery. How to choose the right cattery?
Every cat breeder strives to get the best representatives of the breed. As a rule, they are purchased in catteries, by prior arrangement.
The great demand for purebred animals has led to the emergence of a huge number of organizations whose main goal is profit. Animals in such nurseries are kept in inappropriate conditions, often have low genetic potential and are not suitable for breeding.
In order not to make a mistake in his choice, a cat breeder should know the following main signs of a good cattery :
- a good cattery does not sell kittens on markets;
- representatives of the nursery will give advice on choosing a kitten and provide comprehensive information about each of their pets;
- a cattery that cares about its reputation participates in exhibitions, including international ones;
- the nursery has a pedigree book, where the cat breeder can get all the information he is interested in;
- the cattery regularly updates some of the breeding studs.
Business advertising
Business has started, here they are, the first kittens. You have already delivered babies, fed these troublemakers, played with them when they wanted, cuddled them, communicated with them, in general, worked on their strong psyche and taught them social manners. Only after 3 months (!) of age, kittens can be given (sold) to new families. With documents, with vaccinations, with tears in my eyes and promises to write and call.
Where to sell kittens? First you need to know that kittens grow into cats. Some people like boys, some girls. This is fine. The first place where you need to advertise is local bulletin boards on the Internet, sites selling everything, such as “Avito”, “From Hand to Hand”. It's very nice to have your own website about the nursery.
When your cattery is fully operational, your best advertising will be your visits to cat shows and word of mouth. In addition, if your kittens are interested in further breeding, then other breeders will contact you, and this is already worth a lot!
Choosing a cat breed
The first important step is to decide what specific material you will work with. Which cat breed should I choose for breeding?
You can go 2 ways:
1) carefully study photographs of cats of various breeds and select a few that you liked visually. Because if you don’t like the way your pet looks, then it’s difficult to expect a correct and proper attitude towards it. Next, you need to read the characteristics of the breeds you have chosen. It happens that a person himself is very calm, melancholic or phlegmatic in temperament, and it is difficult to imagine how he will cope with cats of “reactive” breeds. And the last step: from the list reduced to 2-3 breeds, you will need to select a breed whose representatives you can financially afford to purchase.
2) initially, despite all the “buts” and enemies out of spite, choose a breed based on the maximum “exhaust” after selling the litter.
There are a huge variety of cat breeds at the moment. The vast majority of them are “legalized” by various cat federations and allow you to breed them completely calmly (with the right approach). There are some newly bred breeds, or controversial species, which are recognized by some and not recognized by others, but we will not remember them now.
So, an approximate list of cat breeds that are in high consumer demand:
1) Maine Coons (people love these cats for their huge size. An adult Maine Coon looks like a small lynx and always impresses those who look at it);
2) oriental cats (graceful cats with a dog's face and ears in the form of bat wings);
3) Scottish folds (plush fat dogs with curled ears);
4) sphinxes (several types of “hairless” cats);
5) British shorthairs (just plush fatties);
6) Russian Blues (cats with only one color – blue, green eyes and an aristocratic character);
7) Persian (cats with flat faces and increased shaggy hair);
Kurilian bobtails (cats with short tails, similar to lynxes);
9) Abyssinian (graceful cats with bright colors and crazy temperament);
10) Siberian (originally Russian furry cats);
11) Bengal (cats similar in color and posture to leopards).
Of course, you must take into account the purchasing power of the population of your place of residence and the popularity of the breed in your region.
The next step is educational program. Don't go to bookstores for cat literature. They sell either reprints of old books in beautiful covers, or uninformative but expensive cat photo albums with beautiful photographs. Publishers are people too, and they want to make money. Therefore, go online, register on “cat lovers” forums, go to the section on your breed and start reading and reading. The forums contain the most valuable and lively information. You will gain more knowledge there than anywhere else. Before rushing with your questions into the seething communication of breeders (people involved in breeding cats) and not looking like a black sheep against their background, you need to learn the breed standards so as not to screw up in the first round. And don’t even think about asking questions like “How much do kittens of my breed cost?” and “Where is the best place to sell kittens?” You don't want to be thrown into the abyss, do you? And in this case you will simply be torn apart. After all, not a single breeder admits that he breeds cats for money either. Only in the name of high ideals and improvement of the breed!
To approach practice, you need to learn the theory. That is, in order for you to become a real breeder, so that later you will be recognized by your own people, you must undergo training in felinologist courses, which last on average 3 months, with mandatory exams and obtaining a diploma for the right to engage in felinological activities. Without this diploma, you will not be able to register the nursery where you intend to breed. And without a cattery, you will not have serious applications for serious work, and “your” kittens will not be able to be registered. And unregistered kittens fall sharply in price, otherwise they wouldn’t have to be adopted for free by friends and acquaintances.
How to organize a cattery, and is it worth becoming a breeder?
The opinion about a person who breeds and sells kittens is often very negative: sometimes he appears to be a torturer of animals, sometimes he gets rich with millions sewn into his mattress from the sale of purebred pets.
- Who is a cat breeder?
The person who bought one or more cats for breeding is he, the breeder. True, this is not all that the owner of a breeding cat must do to be recognized and respected by his colleagues, and for the little meows to attract a long line of buyers.
— The cat must attend the exhibition and receive diplomas from experts. A specialist may not give a diploma to an animal if it does not meet breed standards or is not prepared, for example, its fur is poorly combed. As a rule, there should be not one, but two exhibitions for each pet; it will cost 3-10 thousand rubles per tail. An expert may recommend castrating an animal that he does not like. This is usually a huge stress for the owner.
— After receiving diplomas at the exhibition, the owner of the club needs to take a referral for mating. If he only has a cat at home, then he needs to look for a cat, mating with which costs a lot, approximately this is the price of one kitten.
- So, the mating took place, the cat is pregnant, capricious and not feeling well. It’s better not to invite anyone home at this time, so that she doesn’t get infected with anything, feed her vitamins, take care of her and cherish her. By the way, during the second month a pregnant cat eats three times more than usual, so food costs increase.
“After giving birth, the tension only increases, because the kittens squeak and the cat runs around restlessly. She may refuse to feed them, and in this case the owner will have to do it himself, with a special mixture, around the clock, every two hours. The mixture costs 1.5-2 thousand rubles, and it only lasts for a few days.
— According to the rules of most clubs, kittens must live with their mother for up to three months. Only after this time are they psychologically ready to move. Age is not taken out of thin air: kittens adapt socially from the age of two months, that is, they learn to go to the litter box, use a scratching post, and eat from a bowl. Usually a month is enough for them to arrive to their new owner well-mannered and trained. In addition, up to 3 months, the breeder must give them a complex of three vaccinations. For an offspring of five kittens, this pleasure costs 15-20 thousand rubles. For all this time you will need about the same amount of food.
- It would seem that the expenses are over and you can sell the kittens? Yes, you can. For each animal you will need to buy a veterinary passport and have vaccinations listed there as they become available. The document costs approximately 50 rubles per animal. Plus, it is mandatory to register a pedigree at the club - 500 rubles per person.
As a result, the owner becomes a good cat breeder, and gradually, over the years, begins to earn a reputation among colleagues and buyers, and receives respectful responses in his club.
- What is a cattery?
Most often, those wishing to purchase their first kitten are advised to contact a registered nursery. Contrary to popular belief, this is not at all a separate room with enclosures, like a barn or stables. A cattery is something that happens to a breeder right in his apartment every minute.
Not all cat breeders live in their own home and can afford to keep their animals in a separate room. To be honest, tailed animals don’t need this; they need to communicate with a person in order to remain at home, be affectionate and responsive. Often, a nursery is an ordinary apartment with a breeder’s family: children, a spouse, family conflicts due to a bad smell, torn wallpaper or torn curtains, wasted money, sleepless nights.
A registered nursery is animals with their owner, who has received a felinologist diploma with a training cost of 3-5 thousand rubles and has officially registered the name of the nursery with the international association and his club. The quality of cats and kittens does not change in any way depending on whether their owner has registered his cattery or not. But the cost of kittens can increase several times.
- How to make fabulous profits from selling kittens.
If you do everything according to the rules of the club, be honest and responsible, there will be no huge earnings here. The maximum that is possible is to justify the amount spent on a breeding cat, exhibitions, money given for mating, food and vaccinations of kittens. There may be a small monetary “bonus” on top of this, but it is unlikely to cover the moral stress from exhibitions, conflicts with household members, sleepless nights and time wasted. You need to love cats selflessly to be their breeder, to know in advance the upcoming difficulties and financial costs.
But no one will protect the nervous system of a novice breeder from inadequate colleagues who may begin to criticize his cats, refuting all the good words of the expert at the exhibition. Fellow breeders can be knowledgeable, responsive, and help a newbie in everything. Or they can be like this, angry and hysterical. They say dog breeders are more balanced and disciplined.
Probably no one can calculate in advance the exact amount of money spent on raising a litter of kittens. The fact is that in addition to mandatory expenses, there are unpredictable ones. A cat or kitten may get sick, and in these cases the veterinary clinic has to pay a lot. Food, filler or other necessary things will increase in price. So, you definitely shouldn’t count on making money from selling kittens.
For breeders, breeding and raising animals is just an expensive hobby that does not bring financial profit, their favorite thing.
Pros and cons of the cat business
When deciding to start breeding kittens for sale, you need to weigh the pros and cons. This business has both pros and cons. The first include:
- the opportunity to combine your favorite hobby with a profitable business;
- fairly quick return on investment, especially when keeping pets in your own premises;
- there is no need to have special skills and talents - to start doing this, you just need to love cats and master the basics of keeping them.
Disadvantages of the cat business:
- high competition, which is due to the attractiveness and accessibility of this activity;
- the need to make daily efforts and allocate time to care for pets.
Sources of financing how to save
How to open a shelter for homeless animals if the enterprise can cost several million, but there are no such funds? In this case, you will have to seek help from the state or local government authorities. A non-profit organization can count on receiving grants, assistance in connecting to social programs, receiving free food, other benefits and subsidies.
In addition, sponsors in the form of local philanthropists, wealthy animal lovers, successful entrepreneurs, and prominent politicians can be involved in the process. You can organize a fund for donations from caring people. To do this, you should be active in promoting information and advertising. This is the only way the general public will be able to learn about the establishment.
Volunteer work at a shelter will help you save money on wages. Bulk purchases of medicines will also reduce their prices. The same principle will apply when purchasing large volumes of feed. Direct deliveries of bones, trimmings and offal from a meat processing plant are much more profitable than supermarkets.
Now all that remains is to weigh the pros and cons, evaluate your strengths and capabilities, and start doing what you love.
Now let's try to calculate income
Let's say you have two girls.
You can get offspring from them no earlier than at the end of the second year of their life. In this case, you will have to pay for mating with a breeding producer. If he is titled and has high-class offspring, aim for 20,000 rubles (or even more, although these issues are discussed and bargaining is appropriate here). So, by the end of the second year you can get offspring from two females.
On average this can be 12 kittens (puppies). While your nursery is little known, the cost of the babies will be much lower - say, 25,000 rubles. In total it will be 300,000 rubles. Minus the mating, we get 260,000 rubles.
It turns out that your breeding females can pay for themselves in just two years, and from the third they will begin to make a profit. Of course, provided that they mate only once a year (no more often!!!), the animals will not get sick, and the offspring will be healthy and meet the standard.
Home-based cat business: where to start?
- Decide on the breed that you would like to breed. To do this, it is worth studying the rating of the most popular cat breeds in your region. The following types of cats remain especially in demand today:
- Scottish Fold;
- Siamese and oriental;
- Canadian and Don sphinxes;
- Siberian;
- Abyssinian;
- Kurilian bobtails;
- Russian blue;
- Persian.
- Study special literature on a particular breed, consult with a professional felinologist about the specifics of keeping the cat breed chosen for breeding. It will be necessary to become familiar with such aspects as:
- genetic features of the breed;
- standard breed parameters;
- rules of nutrition and care (bathing, combing, caring for claws, teeth, etc.);
- veterinary characteristics of the breed (what diseases cats are susceptible to, their treatment and prevention);
- basics and nuances of breeding the selected breed.
- Decide on a location for the nursery. Depending on whether it is a private house or an apartment, the conditions for keeping animals will vary slightly:
Image 2. Cat smells can cause a lot of trouble in an apartment
- Apartment. For a nursery in an apartment, felinologists (specialists who study issues of anatomy, physiology, and behavioral characteristics of cats) advise setting aside a separate room. Depending on the size of the living space, the house can accommodate from 3 to 7 cats. A larger number of them can negatively affect both the psyche of the cats themselves (in a room crowded with their relatives, cats become restless and nervous) and the psyche of your neighbors. Agree, not everyone is ready to listen to “cat concerts” from morning to evening and smell the specific smells of pets. (image 2)
Image 3. Aviary for cats in a private house
- A private house. This is the best option for organizing your own cattery. After all, on your personal plot you can build a spacious, insulated enclosure for your pets, in which they will feel free and comfortable both in winter and summer. (image 3)
- Equipment for the cattery. The owner of the cattery cannot do without spending on the necessary “cat gadgets”. There is a necessary minimum of products for cats that should be purchased to equip the nursery and to care for tailed pets:
- scratching post;
bed (there should be as many sleeping places as there are cats in the kennel);
- cat houses (animals also sometimes want privacy);
- litter trays;
- toilet fillers;
- toys;
- cosmetics for cats (shampoos, coat conditioners, etc.);
- combs and other pet care equipment;
- feed and vitamins.
- Buying cats for breeding. This is perhaps the most crucial moment. And in order to buy the best representatives of the breed chosen for breeding, you should not save money and buy cats at the poultry market or secondhand. It is best to go to a cattery, where sellers can confirm the purity of the pedigree and impeccable compliance with the “gold standards” of the breed with the appropriate documents and certificates. (image 4) It is best to purchase kittens - they quickly get used to a change of environment, are easy to train, and are easier to establish contact with than with adult cats. It is best to start by purchasing two or three cats aged 3-3.5 months. And over time, after a year, begin searching for suitable “suitors.” Again, the best way to do this is through the appropriate clubs and nurseries.

What kind of nurseries are there? What organizations can be called a nursery?
Formally, any organization that is registered with one of the felinological clubs (WCF, FIFE, AFC, MFA, TICA, etc.) can be called a nursery.
At the same time, the cattery receives a unique name, which is also a factory prefix, so kittens born in the nursery have a surname. Depending on the level of the club, the cat breeder acquires registration of local, Russian, or even international significance.
The number of breeding sires does not matter during registration. A cat breeder can have one single purebred animal, and at the same time have the status of the owner of an officially registered cattery.
A cattery can be single-breed or multi-breed , depending on whether they breed one breed or several.
How much can you earn by selling cats?
The cost of one cat depends on many factors, each of which we will try to describe in as much detail as possible. Firstly, no one will ever know about your cattery if you do not take part with your pets in various specialized cat exhibitions and competitions that take place in large cities several times a year.
2-3 months before the expected date of the exhibition, apply for participation, select several, in your opinion, the best cats and properly prepare them for the exhibition, then go to the event and try to make acquaintances with influential people in this field, as well as meet potential clients – lovers of expensive cat breeds.
How to organize a cattery
In addition, it is necessary to properly advertise the cattery - for this, communication on forums on the Internet is best, where you can describe the advantages of your cats over other animals, as well as posting advertisements on advertising stands.
The cost of one cat depends, as already mentioned, on many factors, the main one of which is, no matter how strange it may sound, the “condition” of the animal: if your cat shines and sparkles, its fur will really attract the buyer with its softness, then have no doubt - there will be a steady demand for your animals, and you will be able to sell them at a very good price (however, for this you need to devote a lot of time to the cattery as a whole and to each cat in particular, but if you really love cats and animal breeding has become for you main method of earning money, then you have no other choice).
How to organize a cattery
In addition, the price of animals is greatly influenced by the fashion factor: if you are lucky and you breed the most popular breed of cats today, then the prices for your animals will skyrocket, and you will not have time to calculate your profits and get new animals instead of those sold.
Cat nursery: Pricing and cost
The price of a purebred kitten with a pedigree can range from one and a half thousand rubles to ten thousand dollars. The cost is determined, firstly, by the fashion for the breed in each specific country. Secondly, color. So in 2007, blue and silver were at high prices among buyers, and among (cinnamon color) and “fawn” (fawn color). Thirdly, the price is influenced by the type - modern or outdated. And fourthly, the fame of the nursery, titles and victories of the parents, the quality of previous litters.
The price of a kitten also depends on the class. “Show class” is intended for exhibitions and breeding; these are the best representatives of their breed, carriers of its valuable and striking characteristics. This class can only be confirmed at exhibitions. The “breeding class” includes animals that, for some reason, cannot become champions themselves, but will produce “show class” offspring. The “pet class” includes all the others. They are bought exclusively for the home as a pet and are ready to be loved with all their “wrong” ears and noses.
Breeding plant or still a nursery?
Alas, thanks to the efforts of amateur clubs, these concepts have practically become equal. However, serious organizations continue to keep a distance between nurseries and breeding plants. This applies to both cynology and felinology. Registration of a cattery requires several breeding animals and the appropriate education to prove that you truly understand issues such as biology and genetics.
You will be asked to provide a diploma from a veterinarian, doctor, dog handler or livestock specialist. If you don’t have any, you will have to take courses and pass exams. Training programs are usually carried out by club leaders.
The status of a nursery can be assigned without the presence of the listed documents, if the operation of the breeding plant (for registration of which just one purebred animal is enough) has been impeccable (successful) for ten years. It must be said that in different countries these rules may differ (or amendments are made), so check the details with the nearest official branches and clubs.
How to create a nursery from scratch. What is needed for this? What nuances and difficulties await a cat breeder?
The decision to create your own cattery usually comes when you already have a purebred animal. In this case, the cat breeder can only choose a suitable pair for him or purchase breeding studs.
Next, he must come up with a name for his kennel and register it with the club. Club representatives will check the name for matches and make a decision on assigning nursery status or denying it.
In order to successfully engage in breeding work, a cat breeder must have extensive knowledge in this area and be willing to invest considerable funds in the business without receiving any return at first.
Breeding animals will require care and certain living conditions. For example, cats should be kept separately, otherwise quarrels and fights between them are inevitable. A cat breeder should be prepared for the fact that for quite a long time it will be difficult for his cattery to place kittens until he earns a reputation and fame.
Video – Cat Nursery
In conclusion, it only remains to add that cat breeding is, as a rule, carried out by passionate people who are able to devote themselves entirely to their favorite activity. They made a huge contribution to the development of breeding work with cats in Russia.
Thanks to cat breeders, the breed qualities of existing breeds have improved, and new ones have emerged that have gained worldwide recognition and fame.

Paperwork
This issue should be considered after the acquisition of breeding sires. By the way, sometimes you can buy them in adult, reproductive age. Or rent by agreement. The paperwork will be completed by the head of the club where you will register (this must be done). Among the main documents you will have to provide are your passport and the animal's pedigree.
There is no need for licensing or state registration. The application for registration of a nursery will contain three name options. A package of documents will be sent to the central office, where specialists will check the uniqueness of the nursery name. If none have been registered before, your project will be assigned official status.
REGISTRATION OF A CATTENRY
(application for nursery registration)
A cat nursery is a family nest from where the breeder (cat owner) produces litters, registers the mating of animals and the birth of kittens. Each graduate of the nursery has a nickname for the next letter of the nursery (litters are released with the assignment of letters in alphabetical order) + the name of the nursery, this is the full name of the animal according to the documents. The breeder extends the activities of his nursery every year. The period of activity is a calendar year (from January 1 to December 31). If the breeder does not extend the activity of the nursery within the established time frame, then starting from January 1, the monthly cost of extending the activity of the nursery increases by 100 rubles. If the breeder does not extend its activities until the end of the year (with fines), then on December 31 the cattery will be liquidated in the felinological system of professional cat clubs RSA, without the right to restoration and re-membership.
Nurseries registered in the RSA system do not have the right to open nurseries in other felinological organizations. This is due to the peculiarities of breeding work by lines, dynasties and families, with the selection of high-quality livestock for promising work. The breeder should not have the opportunity to register rejected animals in those organizations where they do not require animals to be submitted to the club, where they only hand out documents of origin blindly without seeing the animals. We do not allow this possibility, therefore we carry out selection work in strict accordance with the current regulations on breeding work.
To register a cattery in the RCA system, the cat owner submits an application to the organization with three options for the name of the cattery (no more than 18 characters including spaces). To help coordinate the work, the breeder is assigned a felinologist, a breed curator, for consultations, registration of litters, and representation of the interests of the nursery at all levels.
If the breeder has completed felinological courses and produced more than 5 litters, then after an interview with the organization, the breeder can obtain permission to independently register litters on the Internet with a felinologist curator of the breed.
A cattery is registered free of charge in the distance cat breeding program. In this program, the activity of the nursery is extended for a year in advance from the date of registration of the nursery (the date is indicated in the Certificate for the nursery). Every year, the breeder renews his participation in the remote breeding program and thus extends the activities of the breeder’s cattery.
Each breeder has the right to transfer the nursery from one program to another at any time. For example, you can transfer the nursery from a regular program (with a visit to the club) to a distance program (without visiting the club, working on the Internet) and back. To do this, the breeder submits an application to the organization and switches to a cat breeding program that is convenient for him.
In the RCA system, the owner of the producer also has the right to register the nursery. As a rule, this is done to create your own dynasty with a sire or several sires in a nursery. The cat owner can breed cats from different felinological organizations, pick up a “maintenance” kitten with a copy of the cat’s pedigree and register it in the system of professional cat clubs RSA and in the future, if desired, use the services of the advertising department.
Opening a cattery means registering its corporate name, which cannot be changed or replaced, which will be used throughout the entire period of the nursery’s activities, and even after the closure of the nursery, no one will call the cattery that in this felinological system for another 20 years. You cannot register a nursery twice under one person.
A cattery can be donated or bequeathed. In this case, the new owner of the nursery contacts the organization within a month and re-registers the nursery in his name (the original documents for the nursery are provided with the application).
We provide clear and precise rules for breeding animals and operating catteries. We have qualified consultants - professionals with many years of experience who will help you establish and maintain the activities of the nursery, as well as represent your interests in all matters of felinology.
PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION OF A CATTENRY IN THE PCA SYSTEM
There are three ways to register a cattery in the system of professional cat clubs RSA:
1. Remotely. To do this, you need to fill out an application for registering a nursery and pay an annual fee of 2000 rubles. (see payment details) and send a scanned copy of the receipt to the address Without payment, applications for registration of nurseries will not be considered. The owner of the animal must be a member of one of the cat clubs of the RCA system (see joining the APKLK). The APKLK pedigree gives the right to free membership in RSA clubs.
2. Arrive at the club during reception hours - see the club’s reception schedule, sign up for a reception at the club. Deciding on the cat breed
As I said, my choice fell on the Abyssinian breed. And this is not just like that. I fell in love with Abyssinians at first sight, and then I looked closely and studied the breed for almost a year. Without knowing your breed, it will be easier to deceive you and snag a cat similar to your chosen breed. It is best to find out as much as you can about the breed of cat you are considering buying. The rarer the breed, the greater the risk of being deceived - this is my axiom in the cat business. The more you know your future cat, or rather the breed, the less chance there is for deception.
Having decided on the breed, it’s time to move on to choosing a cattery. In my version, this is a nursery in Moscow.
Choose from a variety of options a more professional and reliable cattery
signs of a professional cattery
Before purchasing a kitten, we decide on where to purchase it; I spent about a week choosing a cattery. What did I do and how to choose a professional nursery? What are the signs of a reputable cattery? It is not possible to answer these questions immediately, in one sentence. Let's go in order.
Any more or less reliable nursery has its own website. The Internet will help us make an initial assessment of a cattery. Every evening I wrote down the sites of the nurseries in a separate file. I was looking for cat nurseries in Moscow and the Moscow region. In almost a week I have come up with a list of more than 50 breeders who are breeding my breed. I forgot to say that I categorically do not recommend buying a kitten secondhand at a bird market and other similar places, since the percentage of deception in such places is very high. Why take the risk? Risk must be reduced to a minimum.
So, we have a list of nurseries. Now you need to review each nursery for the following points in order to discard suspicious breeders:
- The cattery must have been founded no earlier than 5 years ago. The older the nursery, the better.
- The cattery website should contain as much information as possible, both about the breeder himself and about the cats. The absence of an address or mail with telephone numbers, or other difficulties preventing contact with the cattery is very suspicious. The cattery should be as open and accessible as possible.
After a couple of days, my list was reduced to ten catteries.
Meeting with the kitten and breeder
signs of a professional cattery
Call the numbers on the nursery website. Listen to how they will communicate with you. You can tell a lot by intonation: how the breeder is set up, what his attitude is towards the buyer. It even seems to me that by intonation one can determine, albeit superficially, what the breeder’s character is. And a lot depends on the character and what attitude a person has towards his favorite business. After all, if a person has been breeding purebred cats for several years, it means it’s a favorite thing. If this “favorite thing” is not put on the conveyor belt for the fastest possible enrichment.
Having decided on nurseries after a telephone conversation, we go on a visit. Already on the spot, we look at how the kittens live, what the breeder’s attitude is towards them and towards you as a buyer. We listen carefully to what they tell you about your breed and mentally compare it with the information that you yourself have on this breed.
Under no circumstances agree to purchase a kitten if it is not yet three months old. Check vaccinations, documents about who the kitten’s parents are, etc.
This is the minimum thanks to which you can avoid meeting scammers when buying a purebred kitten. Naturally, you are wondering which cattery I chose in Moscow. There are no secrets - this is the Nefertee cattery. I won’t praise the nursery here; you can see for yourself why I chose this particular nursery.
Your choice of a cattery and the kitten itself depends only on you. And if, nevertheless, you were deceived and sold a sick kitten or the wrong breed that you wanted, only you are to blame, because you were negligent in the issue of purchasing a purebred kitten. Good luck to everyone and buy kittens only from nurseries that have been proven over the years.

Opening a cattery
A nursery is needed by the owner of a purebred cat to conduct breeding work. From the nursery - the cat is sent for mating, from the nursery - they receive information about the fact of the birth of kittens, from the nursery - litters of kittens are released with registration of metrics. Therefore, each breeder of professional cat clubs of the RSA system must have a registered cattery name in the RSA system, where all stages of breeding work will be registered. It is enough to open one cattery in the RCA system for it to be recognized in all clubs of this felinological system for all cat breeds.
What does a breeder need to do to register the name of a cattery in the RCA system? You need to submit an application to the organization with three options for the name of the cattery and pay for the service, that’s all.
Unlike other systems, where, when registering a cattery, breeders are required to complete 2-3 day courses, pay voluntary fees, with subsequent registration of the cattery abroad and illegal activities in Russia, in the system of professional cat clubs they provide the breeder with a paid service for registering the cattery at breeding purebred cats. This means that the organization pays taxes to the state on this type of economic activity, and the breeder consumes this service in the field of felinology and is engaged in legal activities in the organization for breeding purebred cats.
A cattery in the RCA system can be passed on by inheritance, it can be donated, but a cattery cannot be opened again for a given breeder. If a cattery is closed in the RCA system, its re-registration and membership of this breeder in the organization is not allowed. The breeder of the RSA system does not have the right to register a cattery with another felinological organization. These strict measures are necessary to ensure that culled kittens are not tempted to act outside. The measure is justified, which disciplines the work of breeders and allows us to increase the reliability status of the RSA cattery.
The breeder pays the annual fee for the extension of the cattery's activities until January 1st; the period of activity is considered to be from January 1st to December 31st. If the breeder does not extend the operation of the cattery on time, then starting from January 1, 100 rubles are accrued monthly. At the end of the year, the cattery is automatically closed without the right for restoration and re-membership of the breeder in the organization.
Each breeder of a cattery in the RCA system has a felinologist curator of the breed to assist in breeding work and for ongoing consultations. This greatly facilitates the activities of breeders, since the organization trains its staff, who provide assistance to members of the organization. Therefore, the breeder is responsible only for the health of the animals, and the organization is responsible for compliance with breed and color standards.
The breeder has the right to complete the RCA felinological courses, classes are held in on-line format. After releasing five litters of kittens from the cattery and completing felinological courses, the breeder has the right to undergo an interview with the organization and receive permission to independently register the litters of his cattery.
The breeder of the RSA cattery has his own rights and obligations; the activities of the cattery are regulated by the Regulations on the breeding work of the organization. When a breeder clearly and clearly sees what can be done and what cannot be done, then his activities become meaningful. Moreover, professional assistance will always be provided to him by qualified specialists of the organization. Therefore, breeders have been working in RSA catteries since 1993. They calmly and confidently do what they love - breeding purebred cats, and their breeding successes adorn cat exhibitions not only in Russia, but also in many countries around the world.
Graduates of catteries of cats of the RSA system are in great demand and are highly valued among experts and specialists of various felinological systems. Titled graduates of RSA nurseries are the best evidence of the successful breeding work of breeders. The organization systematically provides assistance to breeders in popularizing breeds and assisting in the sale of litters. Thus, through joint efforts, cat nurseries are developing in the RSA system according to lines, dynasties and families according to the selection and genetic programs of the RSA for the benefit of improving existing cat breeds and breeding new ones.
Procedure for registering a cattery in the PCA system
There are three ways to register a cattery in the system of professional cat clubs RSA:
1. Remotely. To do this, you need to fill out an application for registering a nursery and pay an annual fee of 1,500 rubles. (see payment details) and send a scan of the receipt to the address The owner of the animal must be a member of one of the cat clubs of the RCA system (see joining the APKLK).
2. Arrive at the club during reception hours - see the club’s reception schedule, sign up for a reception at the club. In this case, it is not necessary to submit an application for registering a nursery from the website. During a visit to the club, a form for registering a cattery is filled out; the service is provided after payment of the annual fee for the cattery (1,500 rubles) to current members of APKLK cat clubs (see joining APKLK).
3. Join the “FREE-BREEDER” remote cat breeding program, which includes a fee for registering a cattery.

Matings, pregnancy, birth, care of kittens before their sale
Usually, upon reaching 7–8 months of age, pets are already capable of procreation. The most reliable evidence of their body’s readiness to bear and give birth to kittens is the first heat. However, it is recommended to breed cats for the first time no earlier than 1.5 years. You need to look for a partner for mating (if there was no goal of purchasing a cat pair) in advance in special clubs, at exhibitions or through private advertisements.
Only absolutely healthy, vaccinated and dewormed animals are allowed to participate in this procedure. Mating should take place in a calm environment. If problems arise, you need to be able to help the cat. The duration of a meeting between a four-legged gentleman and a lady is on average 3–5 days.
Pregnancy lasts about 6–8 weeks. It is recommended to isolate a pregnant cat from other inhabitants of the cattery. The expectant mother requires special care and nutrition. If problems arise during the process of bearing cubs (prolonged lack of appetite, uncontrollable vomiting, lethargy, etc.), you should immediately call a veterinarian. The desire to create a “nest”, licking of the genitals, anxiety, swelling of the mammary glands are harbingers of childbirth.
Usually cats give birth on their own, but you need to be able to help them if necessary. New four-legged mothers, who need to be isolated from other animals, take care of the babies and teach them independence. If for some reason she cannot feed the cubs, they are transferred to artificial feeding with ready-made formulas for feeding kittens, dry formulas for children, or self-prepared mash. This should be done every 2 hours. 4 weeks of age is the optimal time for the first feeding.
The kitten is ready for sale after it reaches 3 months. Until this moment, he must be vaccinated, pre-treated against worms, activated or registered depending on which system the club belongs to, and metrics done.
How to open an animal shelter step by step: stages of development
The problem of stray animals is now very relevant. Often people treat their pets irresponsibly and do not control their behavior.
For various reasons, dogs and cats end up on the street and are completely unprepared for its strict rules of survival. Fortunately, there are caring people who take in abandoned or ownerless animals.
Such people come to the decision to create a shelter for them.
The main tasks of such an institution:
- capture and delivery to the shelter;
- veterinary examination, treatment, care, sterilization/castration;
- provision of living space;
- satisfaction of needs (food, drink, warmth);
- searching for a new or old (in the case of a lost animal) owner;
- registration of street dogs that have been vaccinated and sterilized (indicated by a clip with a number).
Also, many shelters practice returning the animal to its habitat after sterilization and treatment, provided that there is a curator.
Possible additional services of the institution:
- hotel for animals;
- Vet clinic;
- conducting excursions;
- castration/sterilization of street cats and dogs at a reduced price (performed at the request of curators);
- accepting animals from private individuals.
- courses on communication and training of animals (for example, canine courses for dog owners);
- grooming
The first stage of opening a shelter for homeless animals
Before organizing this institution and starting to provide assistance, you should acquire start-up capital.
Where can I get it? This could be your personal savings, donations from caring people, local authorities concerned about the problem of the growing number of stray cats and dogs.
A good option is to look for a sponsor in the form of prominent personalities, politicians, entrepreneurs or companies.
Stage two: searching for like-minded people
The idea of creating a shelter for homeless animals comes to many people. But unfortunately, not everyone is able to do this. However, they are valuable employees.
For such people, love for animals and a willingness to help them is not only a way of thinking, but also a way of life.
Having found such work colleagues, you will fill your shelter with responsible people who treat abandoned dogs and cats with care. This choice of personnel will eliminate the risk of animal abuse.
Required staff for the shelter:
- manager and deputy manager;
- employees caring for people under their care;
- employees who maintain the cleanliness of the premises;
- veterinarian, veterinary assistants;
- dog handler;
- a car and driver for catching and transporting animals (preferably having cages in the car);
- watchman, night watchman.
In a small shelter, some responsibilities may be combined. An advertising campaign, as well as the organization of events to help the organization, will allow us to acquire a constant flow of volunteers and donations, monetary or material.
Third stage: project registration
When you have made friends and gained financial support, it is worth registering a shelter for homeless animals. To register, you should contact the department for work with public organizations in the city administration.
There are several options for registering a shelter:
- Non-profit organization. It is advisable only if there is no commercial activity on the territory of the shelter. NPO, OPF. The organizational and legal form of the project will make it possible to receive subsidies from the state. It is possible to draw up a contract for stray animals. This will allow us to receive funding from local authorities to catch stray dogs and cats. Pros: reduced taxes, possible subsidies and charitable donations. Disadvantages: payback period is 5–10 years, depending on donations, prohibition of using funds received for third-party needs in the amount of more than 20%.
- Commercial organization LLC. Allows you to provide paid services for individuals. Open a veterinary clinic on the territory of the shelter. Hiring personnel in the required quantity, since there is no limit on the funds allocated for salaries. Such a project can be self-sustaining. Disadvantages of such an organization: lack of benefits, lack of assistance from the state.
If you find it difficult to choose or do not have the proper experience, you should contact a lawyer for advice or hire one to complete all the documentation. The process can take up to 3 months until all the nuances are taken into account.
Stage four: finding premises to open a shelter
The room must meet several rules:
- be far from residential buildings, which will avoid complaints about barking dogs;
- the shelter building must be heated and have a ventilation system;
- large surrounding area.
Shelter space can be rented, purchased, or built on a purchased site. Of course, building a building is the best option, because it will allow you to design the room, but it is expensive. Renting non-residential premises will cost approximately 300 rubles. per sq. m.

How to find the right nursery?
People who breed cats must put their whole soul into them. Only in this case the animals will be well-groomed, beautiful and healthy. At the same time, regardless of weekends or holidays, cats need to be given a lot of attention, fed and caressed. Despite this, there are also catteries in Russia where animals are just a business. They are not given the necessary care and attention. It also happens that they do not properly monitor the breeding of a pure breed. To avoid running into such an establishment, you should be very careful. Therefore, it is best to contact clubs that are members of the Association of Felinological Clubs.
When choosing a nursery, you should pay attention to every little detail. A positive aspect would be the owner's invitation to look at the animals.
If he offers to come at any time and chat with the cats, look at their living conditions, etc., then this indicates that he has nothing to hide. He himself may be open to communication and help with the choice. If it is necessary for the cat to have documents, you should choose a cattery that has all the certificates necessary for the work. You can request all documents from such an organization before purchasing an animal.
When choosing a cattery in Russia, you need to pay attention to its operating hours. If it opened recently, it’s worth studying it more carefully.
If he has been working for many years, then getting the information you need about him will not be so difficult. It can be looked at more objectively. Breeders in nurseries must answer all questions about keeping cats of the desired breed.
It is very important that animals in nurseries receive not only food, but also the necessary care. This primarily concerns the health of cats
They must receive all necessary vaccinations. Their presence and time must be indicated in the medical record. If all this is available, then you can buy a kitten without fear. There are cases when purebred cats give birth to kittens that do not meet the standards. Cat nurseries in Russia can sell them at a lower cost or even give them away for free. This is a good opportunity to get a beautiful mixed breed kitten.
Sincerely, Active Kid!

[td] Why is a nursery registered?
The breeder registers the cattery so that all cats of a given breeder have the same “surname”.
According to the decision of the General Assembly of the WCF (General Assembly World Cat Federation), which was held from January 19 to 23, 2017, any breeder working according to the rules of the WCF must register the cattery in the general list of World Cat Federation nurseries in Germany.
The club has no right to issue a pedigree without indicating in it a kennel registered with the WCF.
PLEASE NOTE: Nurseries are registered only for members of the Moscow Club.
However, membership in the club is not formal. If you join our club, you undertake to comply with all conditions of breeding work. Please pay special attention to paragraphs. 4.1-4.6 Tribal Regulations:
The club issues documents for kittens only after the kittens have been examined by a felinologist and if their parents have show grades!
The nursery that we register for you in the WCF will be listed in the WCF list behind our club. The club bears a certain responsibility to the WCF management for the activities of the nursery. If the nursery does not comply with the WCF rules, registration with the WCF will be canceled.
In connection with the above, the question “Is it possible to register a nursery in WCF THROUGH YOU?” sounds incorrect. YOU CAN'T THROUGH US. You can join the club, register a nursery, and follow all the rules of the WCF and the rules of the club.
Registration of the nursery has nothing to do with courses and breeding.
In order to breed a female cat, the breeder must show the cat to experts and obtain show grades for it (for him).
Felinological courses are completed in order to have knowledge about cats and the right to handle kittens independently. Usually the breeder also registers the nursery at the same time as the courses, because involves conducting fairly active breeding work, which requires both knowledge and the name of the nursery. However, the courses are not a prerequisite for the nursery, and the nursery is not a prerequisite for the courses.
Registration in WCF Germany takes some time and there are problems with names - not all names are accepted.
To register with WCF you must come up with 3 nursery names, arrange them in order of priority, WCF selects one. Here you can check whether such a nursery is already registered with WCF or not: https://www.wcf-online.de/WCF-EN/zuechterinfo/cattery.html
Questionnaire for registering a nursery in WCF >>>>>>
But even if your names are not on the WCF site, this does not guarantee that WCF will register one of the names you suggest. The decision is made by the employees of WCF Germany, and KLK "Moscow" has no way to convince them to accept this or that name.
BASIC RULES:
The name of the nursery is registered in any of the three international WCF languages (English, French, German) or in transliteration.
The name of the nursery can consist of one or two words and should not exceed 15 characters, including spaces.
It is not allowed to use already recorded names of other nurseries, both in Russia and abroad, and in various exhibition systems.
If your nursery is already registered in another system and you can provide a certificate, this name will be re-registered in the WCF system.
A name will not be accepted if it includes the names of breeds and the word CAT, as well as the names of cities and countries.
Commonly used “praise” words such as Super, Funny, Star, etc. are not welcome.
Unique, individual names are always accepted, suitable only for you and no one else. Transliteration is accepted very well.

Business plan for breeding purebred cats
Breeding cats as a business, although pleasant, is not the easiest activity. To start breeding these animals, you need to calculate all the risks that may arise during the work process. Drawing up a business plan, the purpose of which is to calculate investments and approximate profits, will help to minimize them
It is also important to study information about which breeds are the most profitable
Finance: how much do you need to invest and how much do you plan to receive?
A business plan allows you to calculate only approximate costs and profits. If investments at the initial stage can be calculated as accurately as possible, then income can be calculated very approximately. How much money it will take to become a breeder of purebred kittens depends on many factors. This is influenced by the region, the planned number of pets, the value of the breed, whether the nursery will be built independently or with outside labor, etc.
Information on the approximate costs of creating a nursery with 10 kittens:
Expense item | Costs, thousand rubles
Menstrual | Annual | ||
One-time | Construction of an enclosure for pets | 150
Purchasing animals | 400
Purchase of inventory | 100
Expenses for veterinarian services, registration | 50
Permanent | Keeping cats (food, care) | 50 | 600 |
Nursery maintenance (water supply, electricity/gas, heating) | 80
Other (advertising, matings, participation in exhibitions, club membership) | 150 |
Based on the figures given in the table, breeding cats at the initial stage will require about 1.5 million rubles. Each of the 8 cats kept in the nursery (the remaining 2 are males) will give birth to at least 4 kittens per year. 32 – number of pets intended for sale per year. The amount of proceeds from their sale will be 1.28 million rubles. (32x40 thousand rubles).
Calculation of business profitability:
- (Income – expenses) x 6% = (1,280,000 – 880,000) x 6% = 24,000 rubles. This is the determination of the amount of taxes under the simplified taxation system (STS).
- Income – expenses – amount of taxes = 1,280,000 – 880,000 – 24,000 = 376,000 rubles. This is the profit for the year.
The most profitable breeds
Having decided to start breeding purebred cats, you need to study which breeds are popular in a given area. You should not focus only on this factor, because, most likely, among the buyers there will be not only local lovers of these animals, but also residents of other regions. Having no experience in this field, it is recommended to start with breeding unpretentious breeds. You need to choose only from those that bring the most profit. These include:
Maine Coon cats
- British;
- Maine Coons;
- Canadian and Don sphinxes;
- Siamese;
- Persians;
- Siberian and Russian blue cats;
- fold-eared Scots;
- Abyssinians;
- Bengals;
- Kurilian bobtails.
Rare and expensive cat breeds:
- savannah;
- chausie;
- Burmilla;
- Peterbald;
- Manx.
Savannah cat and kitten
Cats are divided into classes:
- Show class. Animals absolutely comply with the breed standard, have no defects leading to disqualification, and can take part in the exhibition. The presence of such an ancestor in the pedigree increases the cost of the kitten.
- Breeding class. Cats in this category have minor defects and therefore cannot participate in exhibitions. Their advantages: defects are not inherited, affordable cost, no problems during breeding.
- Pet class. Such animals have serious disadvantages that do not allow them to participate in exhibitions and breeding. However, they usually have documents confirming their belonging to a particular breed, and they are bought by people who do not intend to exhibit them or obtain offspring from them.
What do you need to know and be able to achieve success?
Recommendations for future breeders:
- provide pets with the most comfortable conditions;
- do not feed animals with cheap food, trying to save on their maintenance;
- buy cats that can make a profit;
- officially register your business, otherwise tax evasion will later backfire;
- sell animals at an adequate price;
- before breeding, learn how to properly care for animals;
- know how to properly breed animals and be able to deliver births to pets;
- avoid reputational risks (sell quality animals, do not inflate their prices, deal with customer complaints);
- undergo training in felinological courses.
How much does it cost to open a cat and dog nursery business?
The costs of opening a nursery are relatively small and therefore should not worry you too much. Joining an association or club or purchasing your first pets will also not cause a serious blow to your budget. Significant investments will be required at the stage of functional development: tests, vaccinations, participation in exhibitions, mating and providing pets with the necessary conditions.
Those who are primarily interested in big profits should immediately abandon this idea. Income only slightly covers expenses even when raising expensive breeds. When opening a nursery, initial capital is required.
Initial expenses: for the construction of enclosures, for salaries of workers, for food, for accessories and advertising, approximately 900 thousand rubles.
For example, keeping four dogs of a small indoor breed with an excellent pedigree. Each animal cost approximately 15,000 rubles. In this case, let’s calculate the costs per year:
- 15,000 rub. - stern.
- 3,000 rub. – vitamins.
- 10,000 rub. – training.
- 4,000 rub. - for veterinary services.
- 30,000 rub. - Exhibitions.
- 2,000 rub. - accessories.
To open a nursery for cats and dogs you will need approximately 900,000 rubles.
Name
You already know how to open a cattery (dog nursery). But the “cat house” also needs to be given a name. It would seem that I have completed the documents and go ahead! But no! It turns out that the question “what to call a dog (cat) kennel” sometimes becomes a real stumbling block. The name should be loud, memorable, bright.
Sailors have an interesting saying that has entered the life of society as an unspoken rule: “Whatever you name the ship, that’s how it will sail!” Practice shows that this is not far from the truth. It turns out that people who are looking for a kitten (or puppy) are attracted primarily by the name of the breeding farm (kennel).
And only secondarily are they interested in his reputation. The psychological factor comes into play. Don't forget: each kitten (puppy) will bear the name of your nursery in its full name. And this is additional advertising that should be memorable.
It is better if the name reflects your type of activity and is quite resonant. You can, for example, come up with a name in Russian, and then use a dictionary to translate it into any desired language (international genealogies are filled out in English, but you can choose French, German, etc.). As examples, here are several names: “Le Chats” (cats, French), “Persian cat” (Persian cat, English), etc. You can come up with a melodic name that does not reflect the main essence. It is suitable if you plan to train several breeds. It is possible to determine possible costs, but it is very difficult to calculate future income. That is why a business plan for a dog nursery is always considered conditional. Let's start with the costs:
- two breeding individuals – 100,000 rubles;
- decoration, sun loungers, toys, ammunition - 80,000 rubles;
- food (average quality food of the “Bozita” type) - 53,000 rubles. in year;
- veterinary services (examination, vaccinations) - 17,000 rubles. in year;
- exhibitions 10,000 (for two cats).
In total, you will spend 250,000 rubles. in the first year. In order to determine the costs for the next year, we subtract the cost of breeding stock and get 150,000 per year. Approximately this amount will be spent by you on the maintenance of two breeding sires.
What do you need to open a dog and cat kennel?
The number of nurseries in our country is simply huge. In any nursery there is, as a rule, a large number of animals: cats, dogs and their offspring with pedigrees. Many nurseries are part of various international clubs. Clubs exist as part of international systems (European and American). These systems have adopted their own specific standards for breeds, there are already established judging rules, any animal is subject to registration and is recorded in special stud books.
Let's look at how to open a cattery for cats and dogs step by step:
