Description of the chicken breeding business

The poultry industry is focused on the following:

  • sale of eggs;
  • sale of meat products and entrails;
  • sale of young animals.

Depending on the chosen direction, the future poultry farmer will need to prepare a room for keeping individuals, equip it and purchase young stock.

Chicken products are in great consumer demand

In this case, it is necessary to take into account the following features of the “chicken” business:

  1. A poultry businessman must understand that there is high competition in this business, so sales places will have to be looked for in advance.
  2. Young animals are often purchased in mid-April - this way the birds will have time to get stronger over the summer.
  3. They prefer to buy laying hens at the age of 7-8 months, when they reach puberty.
  4. Chickens of meat breeds are often bought as day-olds, because after 1.5 months they are sent for slaughter.
  5. Young animals need to have their feathers trimmed to prevent the birds from flying over.

It should be noted the main advantages of the chicken breeding business:

  • high demand for meat products, eggs and even chicken manure, while the benefits are due to low costs of maintaining livestock (chickens consume little feed);
  • this business is not tied to any season, because profits can be made throughout the year;

    Chickens are raised at any time of the year

  • a novice poultry farmer will not need any special skills - this is the simplest branch of agriculture that anyone can handle;
  • birds are characterized by a rapid growth rate - most egg-laying breeds begin to produce eggs at 5-6 months;
  • You won’t need too much start-up capital - at the first stage it will be enough to purchase a few dozen individuals, and besides, you don’t have to spend too much money on farm equipment;
  • the farmer will have the opportunity to expand his livestock at any time;
  • almost waste-free production - you can always find buyers even for feathers and manure;

    Bird droppings are also sent for sale

  • if the egg direction is chosen, old laying hens are also sent to slaughter, thereby making a profit from the sale of meat;
  • the state supports any sector of agriculture, and the entrepreneur will only need to contact the appropriate institution with a business plan and wait to receive a subsidy;
  • It is not necessary to devote all your free time to poultry farming - caring for chickens requires about 1.5-2 hours a day, so you can simultaneously engage in any other activity.

Important point! According to statistics, every resident of our country eats more than 22 kilograms of chicken meat annually (this is more than 36% of all meat products). In addition, on average, each citizen buys 260 eggs per year. Chicken manure is in great demand among gardeners in the spring.

To whom and how to sell finished products?

There are several directions for selling eggs and chicken meat:

  • Cooperation with retail and wholesale retail stores. With large customers, the poultry farm will get back on its feet much faster.
  • Sales at food markets. You can sell goods to other sellers or open your own outlet.
  • Sales to private individuals. Chicken eggs and meat can be sold to residents of the locality where the farm itself is located. You can also organize days when the car will go into the city and sell products to residents of the block and nearby houses.
  • HoReCa segment. Sales to restaurants and canteens.

To market and increase sales, advertising is needed. How can you advertise a product:

  • develop a brand and marketing attributes;
  • offer goods at prices favorable to the buyer;
  • conduct BTL promotions;
  • spread information about meat and eggs through word of mouth.

How to choose day-old chicks: step-by-step instructions

Most often, poultry farmers prefer to purchase day-old chicks. In order not to make a mistake with the choice, we will consider the main characteristics of healthy individuals:

Step one: you need to examine the down of the chicks - it must be dry.

Clumped down often distinguishes chickens with viral diseases

Step two: at the time of sale, the chicks’ umbilical cord should be overgrown, so it will also have to be examined.

The presence of purulent discharge indicates the development of infection

Step three: you should also pay attention to the chick’s cloaca - there should be no traces of droppings on it.

This is what the cloaca looks like in healthy chicks

Breeding chickens in an incubator

If the poultry farmer plans to hatch chickens on his own, he will need to purchase equipment for incubation. There are the following types of incubators:

  1. With manual egg turning. These are the most primitive models in which you will need to carefully monitor changes in humidity and temperature. In addition, the farmer needs to turn the eggs himself at a certain period. The only advantage of such devices is their budget cost, but they are definitely not suitable for a large poultry farm.
  2. With automatic egg turning. In this case, practically no human control is required - you just need to set the desired mode. Of course, such devices are more expensive, but they are more convenient to use.

You can make an incubator yourself. In a special article you can find step-by-step manufacturing instructions.

In addition, incubator models differ in the method of laying eggs (vertical or horizontal) and capacity (from 36 to 200 eggs).

If you have a limited budget for organizing a farm, then you can try making an incubator with your own hands. Sometimes homemade devices function no worse than factory ones.

Brooder

From a foreign language, “brooder” is translated as “mother hen” - this is the name of the box in which chicks are raised immediately after hatching, and comfortable living conditions for the chicks are created in it. It is worth purchasing it only if you plan to hatch a large number of chickens (more than a hundred).

It is advisable to purchase a brooder only when maintaining a large farm.

Subtleties of the organizational process

Poultry farming as a business may not involve independent marketing of finished products. But in any case, registration and obtaining various permits will require stasis.

As a little trick, you can organize a “test of the pen”: without obtaining permission, acquire a small number of birds under the guise of a personal subsidiary plot. This is a good test of your own strength, and you can always transfer the chicken coop from the “for your own needs” section to the “farm” category.

This advice should under no circumstances be used as a cover for unregistered receipt of income. This is just a test of one’s “strength”: if a hundred wards do not send a novice businessman into flight, you can increase the number of birds.

During registration, the material and legal basis of the activity is selected and OKVED codes are indicated. Thus, group 01.47 regulates the raising and breeding of poultry:

  • turkeys;
  • chickens;
  • geese;
  • guinea fowl;
  • ducks

The subsections of this classifier group do not imply the production of feathers and down, but they will be formed in a natural order. It may be more appropriate to immediately indicate the code corresponding to this type of activity (10.12). Growing for meat, for obtaining eggs, breeding young animals and breeding birds are separate classifier codes.

Quality certificates and permits from the SES and veterinary service will be required. Sometimes it makes sense to hire an experienced lawyer to collect documents.

Bird walking

A place for walking animals can be equipped in the following way:

  • buy a ready-made mesh enclosure;
  • build an aviary with your own hands.

It is important to consider that the fencing also has some requirements:

  • the minimum height should be about 150 centimeters, otherwise the chickens will fly over the fence;
  • the fence must allow sunlight to pass through;
  • All equipment should also be installed in the enclosure - feeders, drinking bowls, ash baths.

There are also options for portable enclosures

Laying hens, calculation of income from the sale of eggs

If you are planning to engage in poultry farming for the purpose of selling eggs, then you must take into account the following indicators.

Table 4. Number of eggs in the first year.

Bird speciesNumber of eggs in the first year (pcs.)
Ducks180
Geese90
Laying hens250

A laying hen can produce the largest number of eggs laid in the first year; later on, productivity decreases.

Feeding

Feeding for laying hens:

  • proteins - found in cottage cheese, fish flour, legumes;
  • carbohydrates - their maximum concentration is found in potatoes, fodder beets, and mixed feed.
  • vitamins and minerals - birds can get the required amount of vitamins from fresh herbs and vegetables, and sources of minerals are crushed eggshells, chalk, and salt.

Feeding the chicks after hatching includes:

  • combined feed for chickens;
  • dry milk mixture;
  • boiled egg (crushed);
  • finely chopped herbs;
  • bread crumbs;
  • cottage cheese.

It is recommended to feed chickens crushed eggs

Broiler diet includes:

  • combined mixtures;
  • concentrates;
  • soy;
  • animal feed (meat and bone meal);
  • fresh herbs;
  • feed yeast (a week after hatching).

Meat and bone meal is necessary for broilers to gain weight.

Purchasing queen stock, what breeds of chickens, ducks, geese to choose

Before purchasing a queen cell, you should decide for what purpose the bird is needed. Chickens are considered the most popular. Keeping geese and ducks requires larger areas and more varied feeding. Recently, quails have gained popularity, which are raised both for meat and for the purpose of producing eggs.

We raise poultry to order, we work for a restaurant

Exist:

  • Meat breeds of chickens - White Plymouthrock, Dorking, Brahma;
  • Egg species of birds – Russian Whites, Leghorn;
  • Meat and egg - Sussex, Livenskie, Poltava.

Among the duck breeds that have gained popularity are Peking, Gray, Black White-breasted; geese - Kuban, Arzamas, Ekzemskaya.

For a poultry farm, it is best to buy young individuals, whose age is determined by the condition of the feathers.

Legal registration of business

Official registration of a business is an important point in organizing a farm, because if there is no necessary documentation for the products, buyers may refuse it.

To register a business you will need:

  1. Register an individual entrepreneur or LLC (depending on the volume of expected production).
  2. Receive a certificate that confirms the quality of farm products.
  3. Obtain a certificate from a veterinarian after submitting the product for examination.

Poultry meat must be sent for examination

Staff

If you need additional staff for work, then this will be one or two workers performing household tasks: feeding and watering the birds, cleaning the chicken coop, collecting eggs, and so on. But at the start, while your chicken farm is small (up to 100-200 birds), you can monitor it yourself without help.

Personnel and payroll:

  • One worker – 10'000 ₽
  • Part-time accountant – 5'000 ₽
  • Total – 15'000 ₽
  • Our plan considers starting a business that does not require additional labor. Therefore, monthly expenses do not include salaries.

    Costs of starting a farm

    We will consider approximate costs based on a poultry farm for 100 birds (assuming a ready-made poultry house):

    • interior arrangement – 60,000 rubles;
    • purchase of an incubator – 9,000 rubles;
    • purchase of day-old young animals (100 rubles per chicken) – 10,000 rubles;
    • purchase of feed – 3,000 rubles;
    • vitamin supplements – 1,500 rubles.

    It is necessary to take into account that the farm involves constant expenses:

    • utility bills - 4,000 rubles;
    • feed – 3,000 rubles;
    • other expenses (veterinarian, vaccines, etc.) – 5,000 rubles.

    To avoid epidemics, chickens need to be vaccinated in a timely manner.

    How much can you earn from a poultry farm?

    On average, hens will produce 2,500 eggs per month. If we consider that the cost of one egg is 10 rubles, it turns out that the total income from monthly sales will be about 25,000 rubles. From this amount it is necessary to subtract 12,000 rubles (fixed expenses of the farm), then the net profit from such a small farm will be about 13,000 rubles per month.

    Noticeable profits can only be obtained if you have a large livestock

    Good profits can be made by raising broilers. After all, by the age of 2-3 months, birds weigh about 3 kilograms. A kilogram of chicken meat costs about 150 rubles. This means that the profit from each chicken will be about 450 rubles, which means from 100 chickens - 45,000 rubles. Feed costs should also be deducted from this amount - as we said earlier, in two months one broiler eats 7 kilograms of feed.

    Selection of premises and conditions of detention

    Breeding laying hens as a business requires going through a number of procedures that are associated not only with registering activities with the authorized bodies, but with organizing conditions for productive work on breeding birds.
    The first stage of arranging poultry farms is the selection of land and premises. It is better to resort to building a chicken coop yourself. This way it will be possible to provide conditions for a specific breeding procedure for birds.

    When constructing premises for breeding laying hens at home, a number of requirements must be observed:

    1. Placement of perches for birds should be carried out using either the cage or floor method. It is also effective to arrange the cells in a battery manner, this will help save space. If the covered area allows, then it is necessary to build spacious poultry houses with separate sections.
    2. The chicken coop requires compliance with building height standards. Ceilings should be no higher than two meters.
    3. Natural ventilation and artificial lighting are required. Most breeds of chickens for breeding require daylight hours from six in the morning to seven in the evening. Accordingly, the lighting inside the chicken coop should compensate for the sun's rays in winter.
    4. Regular disinfection is required. To do this, it is enough to coat the walls and floor with lime.
    5. The entrance to the chicken coop should be located on the east side. This is what experts in chicken breeding say.
    6. Requires nesting sites. Several hens can occupy one nest. Approximate calculation: one nest for four laying hens.
    7. Organization of an area for bird walking. Poultry farms at home involve creating pens near the chicken coop to prevent the laying hens from running away.
    8. Compliance with temperature conditions is mandatory. Critical indicators for chickens: minus temperature in winter and +27° in summer.

    Failure to comply with the established requirements for keeping poultry will lead to illness in chickens and a decrease in egg production.

    Breeding laying hens for eggs as a business is considered more often, which requires the preparation of premises for the further implementation of the egg trade.

    Selecting and raising chickens at home is used as a related way of earning money.
