Business on maternity leave: how to make money on homemade borscht, cheesecakes and cutlets

Creation and sale of bakery products

A profitable business can be built on the fact that people love baking. They always buy bread, muffins or donuts for breakfast, lunch or dinner, many prefer cakes for dessert. You can capitalize on people's love of baked goods by baking and selling them yourself. You can specialize in a certain baked goods, for example, in the production of cookies, or you can immediately start producing a large number of different treats (cakes, muffins, bread, etc.).

Recently, dietary and gluten-free products have become popular, so you can occupy this niche in your city. You can sell your products directly through your own store or farmers' markets, or you can sell them to local cafes for subsequent sale.

How to encourage takeout orders

Before you increase takeout sales, consider whether you can handle a large volume of orders while maintaining the quality of your food. If yes, then try to start by launching special offers and discounts when ordering takeaway food - this is the simplest and most effective solution. Discount when buying food to go, “2+1” promotions, etc. Give the client the opportunity to order cheaper, and he will order more. But don't lower the prices to the same level as the deli section in the supermarket. Your customer should feel like they are ordering restaurant take-out food rather than microwaved convenience food. Your task is to maintain the feeling that he bought this dish a little cheaper than it costs on the menu.

It is not necessary to add all dishes from the main menu of the establishment to the take-away menu. Choose only the most marginal and popular positions for which you can afford promotions or discounts.

Unusual sweets

Do you know how to create original products that others like? Do you know how to make delicious jam or chocolate? Then you can turn your talents into a means of making money. As with baked goods, original and unusual sweets, such as rosehip-flavored marshmallows, will be in greatest demand.

These treats sell well at fairs, farmers markets, and online retailers. You can also sell them by agreeing with large candy stores, where they will be happy to take your product for sale and help you sell it as soon as possible.

Catering

If you enjoy preparing unusual foods for various occasions, you may want to consider starting a catering business. Preparing a large number of dishes for an event can be a daunting task, which is why you may only take on small parties at first.

In addition, you can specialize in holding only certain types of events, and also prepare only certain dishes, for example, salads. If you organize catering at the holiday yourself, you cannot do without assistants who will help you prepare for the celebration and ensure that the dishes are served in a timely manner.

Which idea should you choose?

Sufficient start-up capital is an important condition for making a profit. Investments may be small when it comes to delivering food to offices or homes. Large investments will be required if the business develops in several stages. For example, opening a large restaurant, and then a summer area nearby.

Choosing a direction is impossible without marketing research. The number of offers related to the delivery of pizza, sushi, and fast food is simply incredible. However, hot soups, homemade pastries, dumplings or dumplings are no less in demand, and there are not many outlets offering these products, even in large cities.

The costs of organizing a catering establishment include the cost of paying rent, bringing the premises into compliance with sanitary standards, purchasing equipment and hiring staff.

A catering business plan must be drawn up for a specific category and type of enterprise, in accordance with GOST R 50762-2007 “Public catering services”. This allows you to quickly determine the amount of investment required to create the material and technical base of the cafe and collect documents confirming the safety and quality of the products offered.

Personal chef

If you enjoy cooking but don't want to take on too much responsibility and catering to large numbers of people, becoming a personal chef is an option. Businessmen often do not have the time and opportunity to prepare a balanced and healthy diet, which is why they hire personal chefs.

Some cooks come to their clients once a week and prepare a lot of food for future use. Some chefs cook at their clients' homes, while others prefer to create at their stove and deliver the food to their homes. At the same time, specialists take into account all nutritional requirements, which is very convenient if it is necessary to create a balanced or dietary diet, as well as in cases where doctors have prescribed a special menu for one of the family members.

About how much you can earn from your kitchen

Elizaveta believes that cooking food to order is more of a pleasant extra income than a stable income for living. A home cook works to order, that is, he does not have ready-made dishes in stock. In addition, such a cook buys products at retail prices, not at wholesale prices. For these reasons, it is difficult for a private chef to compete with small-scale production and, especially, with catering companies. However, if there are regular orders, a home cook, according to Elizabeth, can earn 20-30 thousand rubles monthly.

Svetlana shared with us the most popular dishes among customers. During the week, customers order soups, cutlets and ready-made semi-finished products. The season for the cook is, of course, the holidays. Meat, stuffed fish and cakes are most often ordered for the festive table.

Cooking instructor

It seems surprising, but many people simply do not know how to cook. Some of them buy food at the store, while others want to learn the art of cooking and hire an instructor for this. Typically, such a specialist may focus on a specific area, such as baking or grilled foods, or be a generalist.

Robotics engineer Nikita Kasatov, mechatronics engineer Sergei Korolev and quantum and nonlinear optics specialist Yaroslav Kachanov decided to chip in for the chef when they realized that they could not solve the problem of proper nutrition. All three were involved in sports: Sergei played water polo, Nikita competed for the Russian sailing team, and Yaroslav did crossfit.

Combining work, sports and independent cooking seemed impossible, and the young people had not yet started families. “I had to go to the grocery store almost every evening, then cook this buckwheat, cook the meat, put it all in containers. It takes half your life!” — shares Sergei, who worked in IT at that time.

In search of a simple solution to the issue of proper nutrition, friends began to test various ready-made food delivery services. “We tried almost everything. Some brought some kind of shrimp soups, mango soufflé - we didn’t really understand all of this. And the menu cost about 3.5 thousand rubles. per day, that is, more than 100 thousand rubles would be spent on food per month,” says Sergei Korolev. As a result, they managed to find two services with an adequate price tag - an average of 1.5 thousand rubles. for the daily menu. The weak point was delivery. “For results-oriented athletes, it is important to eat according to a schedule, without skipping meals. When couriers of a service delivering healthy nutrition are two hours late, what kind of regime can we talk about!” - Korolev is indignant.

The friends decided to hire a chef who would prepare proper food for them. Other friends also liked the idea - the services of a cook, who cooked for 10-12 people at home, cost 40 thousand rubles. per month, about another 50 thousand rubles. went to pay for the delivery service, the products were bought by the courier in stores.

“Gradually, more and more people wanted to eat healthy. More and more friends were added to the WhatsApp chat, asking for healthy food to be delivered to them. It became clear that it was time to create a website to accept orders,” says Korolev. The first investments amounted to only 120 thousand rubles, 50 thousand rubles. of which we spent on developing the first version of the menu, the rest on packaging. We found an eco-ware supplier on the Internet and purchased cardboard containers with a plastic lid. “I created the logo in KeyNote in 3 minutes, a simple website was made by a programmer I knew for free,” recalls Korolev. At the same time, clients made an advance payment, ingredients and packaging were purchased with their money.

In October 2020, the partners rented an industrial kitchen, registered an individual entrepreneur and updated the website; by December, the average monthly turnover exceeded 400 thousand rubles. “We agreed with a restaurant in one of the business centers to set up production at their facilities,” says Korolev. “We deliver food from 6 a.m. to noon, and cook at night—from 8 p.m. until 2–3 a.m., when the business center kitchen is idle.”

The most difficult thing, according to the founders of the project, was finding employees. We had to take orders ourselves and coordinate the work of couriers. “We changed about four chiefs and three administrators. We looked for them through recommendations, acquaintances, and in the restaurant scene,” says Korolev. Just Food currently offers six nutrition programs: for weight gain, for those struggling with excess weight and for those who want to stay in shape. On the website you can calculate your calorie intake.

15 couriers deliver boxes of healthy food every two days. On average, 2 thousand sets are shipped per month; in September, the average production volume was 80 sets per day. “The most popular type of subscription is for two weeks,” says Sergei Korolev. — Even if a person orders food for several months in a row, it is psychologically more convenient for him to pay 12–13 thousand rubles, and then renew, rather than subscribe for a month at once for 23 thousand rubles. The main channel for attracting new customers is Instagram (Just Food has 11 thousand subscribers).

Menu updates are discussed by the whole team. “The introduction of a new sauce can grow into a whole discussion: one will defend the taste, the other will defend the calorie content,” admits Sergei. “In general, this food requires some getting used to, a philosophical attitude, it is not for gourmets.” Despite the fact that Kasatov and Kachanov continue to work as IT specialists, the founders resolve key issues together.

The company's turnover is now about 2.2 million rubles. per month. Basic expenses - 200 thousand rubles. for the salaries of cooks and about the same amount for the salaries of two administrators and a manager. 100 thousand rubles. goes to rent a kitchen of 200 sq. m. About 500 thousand rubles. the cost of purchasing ingredients is 250 thousand rubles. Packaging costs the same and courier services cost the same. Net profit - about 200 thousand rubles.

EatBit: online healthy nutrition restaurant

Ekaterina Baranova lost 15 kg by eating boiled chicken breasts and buckwheat. But it took a long time to pay for my results: I had to spend a year and a half to restore my health. After this experience, the girl stopped experimenting with diets and went to work as a trainer in one of the crossfit gyms in Moscow.

“Most people don’t understand that eating boiled chicken breast and cottage cheese for months is not a solution to the problem. A month, and the lid will definitely blow off your head, then you’ll gain even more,” says Baranova. She constantly carried containers of food with her to the fitness club. Colleagues and clients often wondered what she was eating. Once, while searching for a new recipe on one of the American websites, Ekaterina saw an advertisement for a healthy food subscription service and thought that she could organize something similar in Russia. I started cooking at home for my colleagues and some clients of the fitness club. When there were many people wanting to order Baranova’s dishes, the girl decided to organize her own food delivery service.

With an investment of 1 million rubles. family helped. A year ago, with this money, the girl rented a kitchen in a business restaurant in Moscow, ordered a logo from the designer and hired a chef. “Since I had no experience at all in the restaurant business, I made a lot of mistakes. For example, I bought the iiko restaurant management software package for 130 thousand rubles, but most of the functionality was not needed,” recalls Ekaterina.

Baranova buys the ingredients herself - from farmers or in stores, and entrusts delivery to the courier service. The hardest part was creating the menu. “I needed to compose it in such a way that nothing was repeated, the balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates was maintained, and it was convenient for chefs to use ingredients for different dishes,” says the entrepreneur. According to her, the service focuses specifically on the calorie content of the diet and the taste characteristics of dishes, and not on dietary products.

EatBit offers comprehensive programs and meals with specific calorie content. So, a day of a diet of 1600 kilocalories will cost 1.5 thousand rubles, a month - 35 thousand rubles. There are now 400 clients in the service’s database, eight of whom have been constantly eating EatBit dishes for six months. According to RBC calculations, the project’s monthly revenue is about 800 thousand rubles. Ekaterina left her job as a trainer, but she has not yet been able to repay the debt to her family.

The scale of the business is small, but Ekaterina knows every regular customer and adapts dishes - some do not eat rice, while others are allergic to dairy products. “I always dreamed of a cozy restaurant with a family atmosphere,” admits Baranova. “But with Moscow rental prices this is unrealistic, so I decided to focus on delivery.”

Grow Food: a healthy startup

Ironically, Internet entrepreneurs Daniel Galper and Pavel Paskar came up with the idea of a service for delivering healthy meals to athletes while drinking at a bar. In the summer of 2020, they both underwent an acceleration program at the St. Petersburg business incubator iDealMachine - each with their own IT project. During regular get-togethers on Friday, they complained to each other about how much time it took to count calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and most importantly, to cook. “We are both athletes: Pasha practices sambo, and I go to the rocking gym,” says Daniel. “You need to eat right and on time, but there is absolutely no time to constantly organize your diet, and this is 90% of success in bodybuilding.”

In September 2015, the partners rented a kitchen with an area of 40 square meters. m in St. Petersburg and launched a delivery service. A familiar fitness trainer and sports nutritionist helped with calorie calculations and menu planning. “At first everything went very slowly, there were no customers, but there was an opportunity to experiment with the menu,” says Daniel.

Sales started only when one of my fitness blogger friends posted a photo of containers with the Grow Food logo on Instagram. Then entrepreneurs began to actively cooperate with athletes and other fitness bloggers and began supplying their boxes to athletes for free during championships. “We provide them with food, they talk about us on their social networks,” says Galper. Connecting social networks had an explosive effect: in January 2020, the service already had more than 200 regular customers, compared to 40 in December 2015.

Back in November 2020, the project was supported by investor Alexander Borodich - he invested 4 million rubles. “Despite the fact that Grow Food seems like just another food delivery service, as an IT specialist and marketer, I considered its competitive advantages and technological solutions that would allow the project to easily scale,” says Borodich.

In January 2020, the project team moved to a new site - with a kitchen of 400 sq. m. m and new equipment purchased abroad. Thanks to Borodich's investments, high-level professionals began to be hired: chefs were brought in from a well-known chain of Italian restaurants in St. Petersburg, and technologists were brought in from the O'Key hypermarket chain.

The service has only two types of menus: “for drying” and “for gaining weight” - this allows you to systematize the process and reduce costs. Prices for a weekly menu from Grow Food start from 3.3 thousand rubles. in St. Petersburg and from 3.5 thousand rubles. in Moscow. However, not everyone is satisfied with the quality of food. “I got terrible indigestion from eating too much animal protein on Wednesday,” writes blogger Tasha Sokolova in her review.

Investors are not bothered by the abundance of buckwheat on the menu: in June 2016, the service attracted another 30 million rubles.
from the AddVenture Foundation. Now the service sells healthy food worth 25 million rubles. per month in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Every day in St. Petersburg alone, 50 drivers deliver boxes of Grow Food, another 50 people are employed in production, and 15 are in the office in St. Petersburg. The partners have plans to organize food delivery throughout Russia via DHL. It is unlikely that food delivered by mail will be tasty, but “for drying” this does not matter. Save SaveSave

Nutrition coach

Today, taking care of your health has become fashionable, so there are more and more people who want to learn to understand food and feel better. They are the ones who often use the services of a nutrition coach; with his help, they create a plan for eating those foods that will help them significantly improve their well-being.

Clients with diabetes and allergies most often turn to such specialists, since in this case it is very difficult to create a menu yourself. Also, the target audience of nutrition coaches should include those who want to adhere to a gluten-free and vegetarian diet. You don't need a nutritionist's license to do this type of work, although it could greatly enhance your credibility and expand your client base. You can also become certified as a nutrition coach by contacting a nutrition coaching organization.
