On March 20–21, the first practical conference on online education EdmarketConf-2018 will take place in Moscow. The most famous Russian educational brands will share their expert knowledge in the field of creating educational products. And Lifehacker readers will already receive practical advice on launching their own training course from one of the key speakers of the conference, Alexey Polekhin.

Alexey Polekhin

Operations Director at the University of IT Professions “Netology”.

Any professional who has achieved certain success in his field thinks about sharing his knowledge with others by creating his own educational program. Why not, because this is not only a great way to promote yourself as an expert, but also an opportunity to make money on your knowledge. I've put together a step-by-step guide to help you get your educational course off the ground.

Ambulacral legs

Pricing: From $39/month (Mover plan) to $79/month (Shaker plan). The support plan supports online courses, digital downloads, and email marketing. The great thing about this platform is that it does not charge transaction fees, even at lower price levels.

This is a system designed only for creating a site in one of three categories: selling memberships, digital downloads, or online courses. This is pretty cool, considering that you can cut out the rest of the e-commerce clutter. At first glance, Ambulacral Legs offers a clean interface for designing your website. It's simple enough for beginners, and since it's only for memberships, digital downloads, and online courses, the options are more consolidated for users in those industries.

This app is for those who have found that Gumroad or other competitors are either too complicated or force you to pay high fees. Podia offers a great user experience as well as quick launch for online courses, digital downloads, and membership sites.

Academy of Mines

Pricing: Starts at $499 per month

This is probably one of the most expensive of the best course platform options we've seen so far. This option starts at $499 per month. You can pay a total of $4,999 for the entire year if you want and get two months free. For the professional plan, it's $899 per month or $9,500 if billed annually, which is slightly less than the discount.

This Mines Academy Platform is one of our top options when it comes to creating your own online courses and selling them online. It is an all-in-one solution, meaning it provides a complete website where you can launch your brand and start selling courses online.

You can even choose from a fully hosted template that contains landing pages, galleries, and course offer pages without forcing you to customize them. Mine Academy is a good choice because it is a complete course creation and learning management system. This means you can create chapters or divisions, as well as award timed tests, certificates, assignments, and badges. In addition, a forum is included for communication.

Accept credit cards and PayPal to sell your courses and use multiple marketing features such as an affiliate program, email marketing, and live webinar.

What is an online course platform?

Since Mines Academy offers a complete learning management system, it's hard to argue that anyone will be unhappy with it. Basically, if you want to sell video, audio or text courses, anything is possible. This is good for those who want to sell memberships upfront, or for people who don't want to use other marketing tools to contact customers and send emails. The prices for this option are a little high, but there is a range of features to support them.

Mine Academy also offers customized solutions. One of their strengths is that they customize the LMS platform to suit clients' requirements, and free development hours are a standard feature in all of our plans.

Overall, this is the best option for creating a community around your courses with live chats, forums, and marketing tools.

How to create your first e-course and make it sell

Online education is becoming increasingly common - on the Internet you can find the opportunity to take an online course in almost any specialty.
We previously wrote about how to create online courses that will be popular using the WordPress CoursePress plugin. Now we would like to continue the topic of online education by publishing a translation of Marya Jan’s article on how to create your first electronic course and make it sellable . We may not always agree with her approach, however, we found it quite interesting and useful.

We would like to clarify right away: the article does not concern the technical side of the issue; the author, first of all, focuses on those necessary elements when creating an online course, which you must pay attention to when launching it.

We hope you find our publication interesting! It took you months to create this fantastic online project. You spent a huge amount of time collecting material, filming and transcribing videos, creating tables and handouts. Common situation?

You know that your creation is of high quality and is in demand on the market (for example, in one way or another it is connected with the top five most promising areas in the IT field). You have studied the market and are convinced that there is nothing else like it. Of course, there are competing products, but yours is more practical, easier to use and more effective in learning.

You expect that the number of subscribers will grow quickly, and there will be no end to those who want to purchase the course. Unfortunately, none of this happened. You create your course and put it up for sale, but the results are far from expected. They are disappointing and depressing.

Perhaps a similar situation has happened to you before or you have heard about it from aspiring entrepreneurs. It scares you. Of course, you want to create your own course or update an existing one, but you don’t want to take risks without guarantees of success. Don't be afraid, in today's post I will talk about how to launch your e-course so that it sells. So, let's begin!

Stage 1. Research

If this is your first online project, you need to make sure that what you devote so much time and effort to is something that someone will actually want to buy.

This is where many people make the most important mistake, which leads to complete failure of the course. I would say that even if you manage to complete all the subsequent steps perfectly, still, what is not in demand will not sell. There are no options.

So the first step is research. The same applies if you want to re-launch a course that wasn't as successful the first time. You need to analyze everything with a pencil in hand to be sure that the perceived demand is not just a figment of your overheated imagination, but that there is actually a niche that your course can fill.

Start by surveying your target audience. Your most loyal users will tell you the truth. Ask what displeases them most about the topic you've chosen and how it can be fixed.

Don't stop there. Ask what they've done recently to solve the problem and why it didn't work. Ask them to tell you what exactly doesn’t suit them about all the solutions that are on the market today.

These are all questions you can ask in a survey or in a one-on-one conversation. If your audience is small, there are other ways to find a niche market. You can join online communities and Facebook groups and listen to the opinions of the people you target. You can also read blog comments from leaders in your field. Ask people you know who work with the same target audience, but in a different direction, to help you do a survey or just let you talk to some people.

This step is critical. If you can handle it, it will pretty much guarantee that your product launch will be a success. Now let's move on to the second stage...

Stage 2. Course creation and beta testing

At this stage, you need to start putting together your e-course materials. If an e-course or online project is poorly executed, you will have difficulty getting good feedback and recommendations from beta testers. But if you can master this step, it will significantly increase the value of your project at launch and during the sales process.

Start with what you are really good at and what you are familiar with. If you have experience creating a course, great. If not, I recommend working with a specialist in course creation or instructional design.

He will help you outline the program, organize the material, choose the right information and course structure. It will also give you an understanding of how adults learn and the different types of learners - visual, audio, kinesthetic. A well-designed course will put you head and shoulders above the competition.

Now you need to check whether your course delivers the benefits you promise. To do this, you need to get feedback from real consumers of your material and see if they like it: perhaps something confuses them, something is unclear or difficult to apply in practice, perhaps there are gaps in the learning process (remember, you are working from a expert's point of view and are sure to miss something that is difficult for a beginner).

You can hire a group of beta testers for free or for a small fee, depending on your specific course and your relationship with your audience. Sometimes you have to pay to get people to actually take the material seriously, otherwise they won't pay enough attention to it.

Found beta testers? Great. Start presenting them with material in portions and monitor their reactions. They may be able to help you adjust the format, for example, they may find that they prefer written materials, or suggest you create a Facebook group for additional support.

The beauty of this stage is that you can create material as you go, based on the feedback you receive. After completing the course, ask test takers to provide their feedback in writing. Ask permission to use some of these posts as recommendations and in promotional materials.

Once your course is ready, you can contact other people who are active in your field and ask them to review your course. Don’t be shy about mentioning the positive feedback you’ve received previously—you deserve it.

Stage 3. Pre-launch material

If you are happy with how the course is progressing, you can start creating pre-launch material.

Another reason why the launch of your project may not bring the desired results: you have not sufficiently stirred up the interest of people on your mailing list. Plus, your pre-launch material can also help expand your email list.

You need to start working with the starting material by creating a series of episodes (this could be a series of videos or a series of just blog posts), the purpose of which is to awaken the audience’s interest in your e-course. Send more content than you would normally: If you typically send out once a week, start sending out once every three days.

Many people are afraid that if they start sending out more often, it will displease some people. In fact, the only people who will be dissatisfied are those who are not suitable for your project. They, like freebie seekers, will unsubscribe from the mailing list as soon as the product is launched. What does it matter? Why do you care about those who weren’t going to buy anything from you anyway? There is no need to chase the number of emails sent. Removing those who will never make a purchase will have the good effect of making your expectations more realistic.

If your business deals with different types of customers, it makes sense to create a separate newsletter for each group. You can offer a very specific, free bonus that people who join your list can receive.

Finalize your launch plan. Consider how many pieces of material you will send out. Think about the topics that will be covered and how they will relate to the topic of the next post in the series. In this case, if someone sees the middle part of the material, they will also want to look at the previous parts. Focus on what you are strong at.

If you have good camera presence, make a video of your performance. If you speak well, do a voice-over commentary. Or perhaps a written format is your best option.

Finally, give people enough time to absorb your information, but not so much time that they lose interest. 7 days of pre-launch material is a good solution.

Stage 4. Purchasing a course (with a mandatory deadline)

As people follow the natural progression of your prelaunch material, you can make them an offer. In this case, you need to remember a few nuances.

Your proposal must be completely transparent. Tell exactly what people will get and at what price. When talking about benefits, show what exactly they get as a result. This could include your course materials, video transcripts, worksheets, templates, quizzes, handouts, personal access, group training webinars, or access to a private Facebook group. Explain this in detail so that it is absolutely clear. Remember, those who don’t understand don’t buy.

Set a deadline for making a purchase. It's human nature to drag your feet, but sooner is better for you than later. To persuade, you can play on urgency and limited quantities.

First, you can do an internal launch for people on your list, giving them the opportunity to make a purchase at a special subscriber price, with a discount. To help them decide, tell them that the price will be higher for the majority. If your course involves one-on-one work, the number of people cannot be too large; this is a natural, not an invented limitation.

Once you have the opportunity to purchase a course, you need to do two main things. First, you need to convince as many people on your starting list as possible to sign up by sending them regular reminders. Depending on the length of the period open for purchases, you can send letters every other day, and on the last day - twice. You will find that most people will leave their decision until the last minute and will only join a few hours before the end of the period. So send one email in the morning and another a few hours before the deadline.

Secondly, for a launch to be successful, you need to constantly work to attract new people. So let's look at the last part of the launch work.

Stage 5. Advertising on social networks

You should constantly promote your pre-launch and launch materials. It is very important to attract new people, this increases the chances of a successful launch.

Let's take a quick look at the numbers. On average, 1-5% of the people on your starting list will enroll in the course. Now let's do the math. If you want to recruit 60 people for a $500 course, then, with a 3% conversion rate, you need to have 2,000 people on your list to make $30,000 from your launch.

Such calculations help set realistic goals. If you have 500 people on your list and you plan to make $50,000 but only end up making $10,000, don't consider your project a failure. In fact, the result is quite good. The problem is that your expectations were too high. If you want to achieve such a goal, then you need to have a list to match, so building an email list should be a priority from day one. To really achieve these kinds of starting numbers, you need to start creating the list already at the stage of developing the course concept.

Start by being active on your Facebook pages and all social networks. If you can't handle it yourself, hire an assistant to ensure your presence on social networks. Submit a series of guest blog posts related to your line of work. Start as early as possible to connect with those who have influence in this area, and try to have as many posts as possible on various blogs close to the time of launch.

If you can, it would be good to host webinars. Use Facebook ads that link to your landing page so people can sign up for your newsletter, and advertise your webinars there as well. You can also promote your pre-launch materials on Facebook. Join forces with people who work with the same target audience, without intersecting with you or being your competitors.

Launch an e-course!

Remember, if you have created a well-executed course for which there is real demand, stirred up the interest of subscribers and made an attractive offer, the launch will meet your financial expectations. Nothing too complicated, simple math.

The launch will be successful if you don't screw it up yourself, for example by setting exorbitant prices, sending out weak pre-launch material (which is the face of your course), or creating something that has debatable potential for success in the market. Therefore, do what is described above, not as a dogma and a literal guide to action, but rather as a starting point for developing your own approach and everything will be fine.

I wish you success.

Udemy

Pricing: Free (but you give up 50% of sales if Udemy recruits a student for you).

Udemy is often considered the best online platform for people who want to start small without spending a lot of money. While you don't get much customer support or freedom, you can get started for free. However, you will need to give a portion of your revenue share—up to 75%—to the Udemy brand.

Udemy is by far the most popular solution for creating and selling online courses. Online reviews are known to be mixed, but its network is unmatched for attracting more students and increasing sales. Creating your course is all done in the Udemy dashboard, and when you're done, it gives you access to millions of potential students in the Udemy community.

Process any type of credit card, but keep in mind that Udemy keeps 50% of your earnings when they help you promote a course to a student. However, if you bring a student without the help of Udemy, 100% of the income will be yours.

Who is this online learning platform for?

I like this course for people who are nervous to create their own website or for those who want to save money. After all, it's completely free. Udemy focuses on selling video courses, but you have the option to upload other course materials such as PDFs and audio. In my opinion, you're basically giving up a little control over your course to gain access to a giant community.

Features of training:

  • approximately 90% of lessons contain practical tasks, and teachers give each student feedback and help correct mistakes;
  • microlearning format: lessons last 10–15 minutes, not 2 hours;
  • ready-made instructions and documents.

Cost – 30,000 rubles. Duration of training – 3 months.

Flora LMS

Pricing : What you pay for this solution depends on the number of students actively interacting with your courses. A school with up to 50 active students pays 3.50 per user per month, and 100 users pays 3.27 per user per month. The cheapest package is for 300 users, and it will cost you $2.87 per user per month on an annual billing schedule. Anything above this corresponds to an individual quote.

Let me guess. You probably haven't heard much about Flora LMS yet, and that's understandable because it's spanking new. But then again, does the name iSpring sound familiar?

Well, iSpring is a renowned leader in the field of digital learning and has now created a range of software solutions for different types of learners, corporate trainers and students. Flora LMS is one of the latest developments, considering that it was launched in 2020.

Admittedly, it's always nice to see an industry veteran launch a new software solution. They are always trying to outshine their competitors by balancing recent advancements with pre-existing technologies.

Now it turns out that Flora LMS doesn't disappoint when it comes to this. The learning management system was designed to offer educators a simple and systematic way to host, market and sell their online courses.

Don't get me wrong though. Flora LMS is not one of those platforms where you create and host a full-fledged online school in the form of an extensive website. It's more of a system that offers a simplified set of tools for creating a basic online course store. The courses themselves are housed on separate pages, each of which displays details such as user reviews, course syllabus outlines, and descriptions.

Speaking of which, Flora LMS allows you to deliver your courses using standard documents (XLS, DOC, PDF), presentations (PPT), as well as media files such as MP4, JPG and FLV. You can also administer tests and assessments, gamify the online course experience, and engage students through interactive simulations. Interestingly, the system subsequently starts up and automatically issues certificates to students who crack the tests. You can also configure Flora LMS to issue course completion certificates for graduates, as well as badges and possibly some credits.

Now wait a minute there. Where do you even get students to register? Where do Flora LMS tutors look for potential clients? The truth is that there are several digital marketing channels you can use to promote your Flora LMS courses. For example, if you want a share of Google's search traffic, Flora LMS will certainly give Google access to your course pages. This means it appears in search results.

Otherwise, you can also cleverly take advantage of existing students. Just offer them discount coupons to share with friends. The size of the discount depends on the interest rate you choose when determining the discount parameters.

Ultimately, when new students begin, payments for their courses are processed through Authorize.net, PayPal, and Stripe. Now add to this Flora's flexible currency system and you have a learning management system that can accept all the world's major credit/debit cards in about 30 different currencies.

What is an online course platform?

Flora LMS is the right platform if you want to quickly launch your own online learning center and easily monetize your eLearning content. It is also a good choice for companies that provide certification to their employees as part of their online training.

SEO promotion of online schools in search engines

Search engines are used by 95% of Internet users to search for services. The advantage of SEO promotion is the generated demand of the target audience. The search phrase entered when searching for an online training service contains a request for a service, for example: online English language teaching, online chess school, distance learning drums, online fitness trainer.

To successfully promote your school’s website to the first page of search engines, it is necessary that the site is technically correctly created, optimized, and also contains a sufficient amount of content.

Usually we develop a new or significantly improve an existing website so that it meets the requirements of Yandex and Google.

It is important to prepare unique content for the site. An online school website should have the following sections:

  • descriptions of lessons, lesson plans;
  • photographs and videos about the company and trainers;
  • free demo lessons;
  • live section with customer reviews;
  • company blog with expert articles from your company;
  • schedule;
  • alumni reviews, success stories;
  • company news and offers, promotions.

Landing pages need to be refined to achieve maximum conversion. We write selling texts, layout selling pages, and include video and audio content.

Each page of the site should contain, along with useful information, selling conversion elements, for example, an order form, an invitation to sign up for a trial lesson, or take the first free lesson.

SEO promotion of an online school in search engines over time can become the main channel for attracting customers, as it will ensure a stable flow of applications. The cost of attracting each application will be lower compared to other channels.
