We have already written about where and how you can find a manufacturer in China yourself. One of the simplest, most convenient and accessible ways is to search for a product or supplier on specialized B2B online platforms. We offer a selection of Chinese websites for wholesale purchases in the Middle Kingdom.
Alibaba.com
Website: https://www.alibaba.com
Headquarters:
Hangzhou, China
Tagline:
Global trade starts here
The site was
launched in 1999. It is the largest and most popular B2B product search platform in China.
Alibaba.com has several language versions, including Russian.
The name Alibaba has long been synonymous with Chinese sourcing. When you are faced with the task of finding a product in China, Alibaba.com is probably the first place you go.
Suppliers here include not only manufacturers, but also trading companies and resellers. Most of them are focused on large wholesale.
Remote work
Many people start working with China with remote purchasing, without visiting China to exhibitions, factories and wholesale markets. Is it possible to work without intermediaries in this case? Of course you can. But not in all cases.
We buy from domestic Chinese sites TaoBao, 1688.com and others
The first case when the help of an intermediary cannot be avoided is when purchasing from the above sites.
Tao Bao, 1688 and some other sites - work exclusively within China - payment from the Chinese is required, delivery is only
inside China. Forget about all the “official TaoBao in Russian” and other sites - such sites are made by “bad” intermediaries - outbids. Well, there is no TaoBao in Russian, and there never will be!
If you still decide to purchase from these sites, contact good intermediaries. You can just google “taobao intermediary” - a bunch of results will come up, choose a partner “to your taste.” The same goes for the site 1688.com
Usually, a good buyer from TaoBao sets a clear commission (5-8% of the amount) and organizes delivery.
At the same time, you can, of course, choose a product among thousands of suppliers on websites yourself. Use translators, search in English and Chinese - there are many articles and videos devoted to this, check it out.
We buy from suppliers from Alibaba (alibaba.com)
Alibaba.com is one of a kind website. This is the only wholesale
a site that is recognized by absolutely all manufacturers and wholesalers in China. Many other platforms try to copy the site, attract suppliers to their sites - this usually does not end in success.
The site is specially created for international sales from China. Absolutely all suppliers on the site speak English. Absolutely all products have an adequate and competent English description - suppliers work specifically on this, they understand perfectly well what they are selling to wholesalers abroad - their staff must know English.
I will describe the whole process very briefly.
Find a product from thousands and thousands of options. You will see the prices - never believe the first price that is listed on the Alibaba website. Be sure to start a conversation with the supplier to clarify the price, minimum order, and delivery time.
Register on the site and start a conversation with the supplier in English. Discuss all the details, discuss the price in dollars or yuan - it doesn’t matter.
Use any online translator to communicate
. You don't need to know English - write simple phrases in Russian to the translator, translate and send to the supplier. Translate his answers - everything is very simple. You don’t even need to communicate within the site itself - immediately ask for the seller’s WhatsApp or Wechat number - communicate directly.
Never buy directly from the site - you may have very serious problems with payment and delivery. Everyone uses Alibaba as a kind of “catalog”, like a “telephone directory”. It’s easy to find a supplier and a certain product, it’s easy to agree on prices, but no one does it like that from a website.
Ask to send an invoice for the goods - it will be in dollars or yuan. Pay for it yourself or take it to your export agent for payment.
And here we come to the question of whether you need an intermediary
when working with suppliers from alibaba.com
You will need at least a warehouse and delivery services
. That's the minimum. You requested an invoice from the seller, did you pay the invoice yourself or with the help of your agent - where to deliver the goods? To which port, to which warehouse? How are you going to deliver the goods? Alibaba suppliers do not deliver. Do not compare with Aliexpress - you cannot send a wholesale batch from Alibaba via Russian Post.
You may need an intermediary when working with the Alibaba website for payment
to the supplier to provide
warehouse
and
delivery
. The rest you can handle on your own.
We buy from manufacturers in China without using websites
You must understand that China does not end with Alibaba, 1688 and TaoBao. Not all manufacturers are located there, but only those who know how and want to do it. This is where the phenomenon of “searching for a supplier in China” arises as a separate service. For any other country in the world this is unthinkable - everything is on the Internet.
How to find a supplier in China is a long conversation, and we will definitely return to it in another article. Now let's assume that you have a supplier - friends advised you, found you at an exhibition or in some other way.
Is it possible to work with him without intermediaries? Of course
. Especially if we are talking about a large factory that is engaged in foreign economic activity.
Communicate directly or through an interpreter, open a foreign currency account, conclude a contract, transfer money. The supplier will send the goods in a container; you can use the services of a broker or clear the goods through customs yourself.
Sounds too complicated? Then you will need a partner to solve certain problems. You may have difficulties transferring money. Perhaps the order is not so large and you do not need a whole container - you need to bring the goods as part of groupage cargo. Or you do not have the opportunity to check the goods before shipping.
There may be different reasons. Contact a good export agent to solve specific problems. At the same time, you work directly with the manufacturer - your prices are real.

Why is it profitable to produce goods in China?
Russian business has long been using the services of Chinese manufacturers. This is practical and cost-effective, because the Celestial Empire has already learned how to make high-quality products. The times when Russians thought with horror about the negligible consumer quality of purchased Chinese goods have long since sunk into oblivion. And the very concept of “Chinese quality” is gradually ceasing to be a common noun, although it has not yet completely ceased to be one.
Chinese industry has a significant impact on the domestic Russian market. And high competition on it is not at all an obstacle. There was, is and will be a demand for Chinese goods. At least for the foreseeable future.
A guarantee of high demand for Chinese goods is its low price. This advantage is dominant. And the relatively low standard of living of Russians and residents of other CIS countries makes almost the entire post-Soviet space a bottomless market for Chinese goods.
They say that the whole world is filled with Chinese goods. This is true, but the degree of their consumption in different countries differs markedly. In the countries of the European Union, for example, there are also Chinese goods, there are many of them, but they are of much higher quality than in the CIS countries. For example, the same children's toy made in China is sold in both Russia and Estonia. But only the latter will be of much higher quality. And Chinese goods are also present on the shelves of Estonian supermarkets, but by no means dominate. A similar situation can be observed in other EU countries. EU states limit the entry of Chinese products into their market. It must be produced at official Chinese enterprises, certified, environmentally friendly, and so on. In any country of the European Union there are also markets that are familiar to every Russian. You can buy almost everything with them - from a pin to a car. But only on the Russian market, 90% of the goods will be produced in the Middle Kingdom, and on the European market - only 10%. The richer the country, the less demand for Chinese goods. I had the opportunity to live in the EU for several years, where I rarely saw Chinese jackets, jeans or shoes on local residents. The European Union, as a rule, consumes goods produced within this interstate formation or in the USA, Canada, and Australia. But for goods from China, there are serious barriers in the form of high import duties, requirements for certificates of compliance with European environmental standards, and so on. If the Chinese manage to get into the European market, then the products supplied will be of the highest (by Chinese standards) quality. And it will cost much more than a similar one in any of the CIS countries. Chinese manufacturers have practically destroyed some branches of light industry in post-Soviet countries. For example, over the past ten years, garment factories in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine have been closing en masse (due to the lack of a sales market). Sewing clothes has become unprofitable due to its high cost - people buy cheap Chinese goods, so there is only one niche left - sewing workwear and uniforms for security forces (which, by the way, is also sometimes ordered from the Middle Kingdom). Enterprises are closing, jobs are being cut and, accordingly, contributions to the state budget are not being paid. And this situation is observed in many sectors of the economy. Therefore, when considering the issue of the influence of Chinese manufacturers on the Russian market and industry, it cannot be assessed as unequivocally positive.
The advantages for Russian business representatives ordering the production of goods in China will be:
- low production costs (which is largely due to the low cost of Chinese labor);
- good service (as a rule, Chinese manufacturers offer good service in the first stages of cooperation);
- high performance. It is unlikely that there is at least one plant or factory in China that is not ready to fulfill any order within a strictly specified period;
- the Chinese will be able to manufacture almost any product according to customer drawings;
- Russia has good transport links with China; manufactured products can be delivered by any means of transport.
Along with the undoubted advantages, when ordering the production of goods at Chinese plants and factories, there are also some obvious disadvantages. Among them:
- the difficulty of finding a reliable manufacturer in the Middle Kingdom;
- presence of a language barrier. Not everyone in China is familiar with English, let alone Russian. And “Kitinglish” (a hybrid - “Chinese English”), even in its best version, simply hurts the ears not only of a native speaker, but even of a Russian who is more or less familiar with it;
- underestimation by consumers of products manufactured in China. In some cases, Made in China simply becomes a mark on a product;
- Chinese manufacturers do not always correctly translate instructions for using the product, which can lead to its improper use, rapid wear or breakdown.
Russian businessmen have introduced several schemes in which the Russian Federation can be considered the final producer of Chinese goods. For example, some models of household appliances, 95% assembled in Chinese factories, undergo minor design corrections in Russia and acquire some additional functions. As a result, Russia can be considered the final manufacturer, since the product, ready for use, came off the assembly line of a Russian enterprise.

How to find a manufacturer of goods in China through an intermediary
Mediation in finding trading partners in the Middle Kingdom and in placing orders for Russian businesses at Chinese enterprises has also turned into a fairly profitable business. Today you can find a huge number of offers of intermediary services of this kind on the Internet.
This method has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages can be considered:
- quick solution to the issue of finding a Chinese manufacturer - the intermediary has sufficiently complete information;
- the intermediary can, on behalf of the Russian customer, conduct effective negotiations with the Chinese manufacturer;
- the intermediary can check the quality of products manufactured to order on site;
- an intermediary company will be able to help in preparing customs documents, speeding up the process of delivering manufactured products to the customer;
- If necessary, the intermediary company will be able to store the goods produced to order for some time.
The services of intermediaries in the PRC are, as a rule, used by companies that do not work systematically with the PRC.
The disadvantages of working with intermediaries include:
- unscrupulous intermediaries may turn out to be ordinary scammers;
- the intermediary may not complete his task in full, taking full prepayment for his services.
Where to look for intermediaries
The easiest way to find an intermediary in the Middle Kingdom is to make a corresponding request on the Internet. You can search on Google, visit thematic forums, etc. There are many offers. But the question is whether they can be trusted. Therefore, when negotiating with an intermediary and before making a decision on cooperation, it is important to familiarize yourself with his reputation.
Tips for choosing an intermediary:
- careful study of his work;
- search for feedback on cooperation;
- personal communication with the clientele of the proposed intermediary;
- the intermediary must be geographically located in the Middle Kingdom;
- You need to collect as much detailed information as possible about the intermediary.
The following can be considered as reliable intermediary companies for choosing a Chinese manufacturer and purchasing goods in this country:
- ShopoTam.ru has been operating on the market since 2006. Has at least 100 thousand clients. The commission charged for the provision of intermediary services is around 10%;
- Shopozz has been on the market since 2005. With the help of this intermediary, you can work not only with manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom, but also contact manufacturers from Japan and the USA;
- Queenswill.ru has been on the market since 2011. The company specializes exclusively in the supply of goods from China and the organization of production to order at Chinese enterprises;
- Guron.biz has been on the market since 2010. The company's head office is located in Guangzhou, China. A company that has proven itself very well in the market;
- Wehelpinchina.ru is a company that has been supplying goods from China to Russia and the CIS countries for seven years, and also provides intermediary services in placing orders from Chinese enterprises.
Intermediaries, as a rule, work on a percentage of the cost of the ordered product or the order for its production placed in China. The average percentage of the transaction fluctuates around 10%.
The average commission percentage on a transaction fluctuates around 10%
Drawing up technical specifications for the intermediary
The Russian customer must outline his wishes to the intermediary in as much detail as possible. Drawing up technical specifications in this case plays a vital role. The intermediary must receive “design documentation” for the order being placed, which indicates:
- detailed technical requirements for products (design, material of manufacture, drawings, etc.);
- order quantity;
- deadline;
- expected terms of delivery;
- requirements for technical documentation;
- product quality requirements;
- additional wishes and recommendations.
Agreement can only be reached after the details have been finalized.

How to order production of your product in China
Having found a suitable manufacturer, you need to place an order with him for the production of certain products. In certain cases, the contract can be concluded online (when placing a small and inexpensive order). But it is better to personally negotiate with the manufacturer’s representatives and sign it.
You cannot relax when negotiating with the Chinese side. The Chinese are a wise people; their nature is characterized by innate diplomacy. But we should not delude ourselves. If in the negotiation process, for example, with a Turkish manufacturer, the emphasis should be on price, then with a Chinese one - on the technical parameters of the order, its volume, deadlines and terms of delivery of finished products. It is very important to discuss every detail. It is highly recommended to take a Chinese translator with you to negotiations. The Chinese speak very little English, so many details can be difficult to coordinate.
Video: how to order the production of your product in China and control its quality
Signing the contract
When signing a contract, you should carefully check whether all its clauses comply with the pre-agreed conditions. The contract is drawn up in Chinese, but must be translated into Russian or English. And the correctness of the translation must be checked before signing the document. Otherwise, the process of signing an agreement with a Chinese manufacturer is no different from the standard one.
Production quality control
Particular attention should be paid to production quality control. Much, of course, depends on the order, but in the case of Chinese manufacturers, it doesn’t hurt to monitor the production process at intermediate stages.
It is advisable to personally carry out quality control of goods produced at a Chinese enterprise or entrust this to your representative. This clause should also be included in the contract before signing it. The Chinese side must provide access to the manufactured products (often this point becomes controversial, since the Chinese usually do not allow foreigners into production) or its individual samples.
If the search for a suitable manufacturer in the Middle Kingdom was successful, then we can with a high degree of probability assume that all the effort and money spent will pay off handsomely. No wonder there is a saying among Russian businessmen: “Make it in China and sell the house ten times more expensive.”

Preparing for the search
Before you start looking for a reliable supplier, you need to decide on some aspects of your future business.
- Type of goods that the Chinese partner will supply.
There's no need to get hung up on the details, but you need to know the type of product you're going to sell to. To make it easier to decide, you can first look for the product that interests you, in a domestic or European version. As you know, the Chinese are producing analogues of such products. - The second step is to study the competitors' market.
Before you start trading, you need to find the most popular product; understand why it interested the consumer; decide how much you need to buy and sell it for in order to make a good profit. - Next, you need to decide on the category of supplier from China that you need.
There is an opinion that you need to cooperate only with manufacturers, and not with intermediaries. This is definitely more profitable. However, there is another point here: the manufacturer may suit you, but will such cooperation suit him? It depends on the category of the company.
How to organize delivery and delivery?
After you decide what kind of Chinese products you will trade, you should think about organizing the supply and delivery of cargo to Russia. How to do this as profitably, conveniently and cost-effectively as possible for your business?
Delivery organization
Goods can be purchased in China in two ways: order finished products from a warehouse or place an order for their production by agreeing with the manufacturer. One of the main problems of delivery is customs clearance of cargo. In order to import cargo from China to Russia, you must submit the following documents to customs:
- agreement with the supplier;
- price list;
- invoice;
- packing list;
- bill of lading (for sea transportation);
- export declaration;
- certificate of conformity;
- transport contract marked “to the Russian Federation”, “across the Russian Federation”;
- SWIFT payment document;
- a copy of the transaction passport;
- a package of documents on registration of a foreign trade participant;
- customs declaration.
In addition, an additional package of documents may be required at the request of the customs authority. During customs clearance, the owner of the cargo pays customs duty, VAT, and excise duty. After submitting the documentation, the declarant must pay all customs duties within 15 days, otherwise he will face fines.
There are several main ways of organizing supplies from China that are used by entrepreneurs.
- The entrepreneur becomes a party to a foreign economic agreement, under the terms of which orders are fulfilled, shipments in China and customs clearance in the Russian Federation are carried out. The customs declaration is submitted by the foreign trade participant independently.
- Services of an intermediary company. This method is very profitable, because the buyer does not need to hire a customs specialist on staff: the company takes on all the worries about cargo delivery. Having concluded an agreement with the customer of the goods, the customs representative contacts the supplier, organizes the transportation of goods from China, customs clearance and dispatch of the goods to the desired region of Russia. Thus, the entrepreneur can be confident that the cargo will be delivered on time. An intermediary company can be a customs representative providing this type of service.
It is worth remembering that the first delivery method is beneficial for very large customers, since in this case it is necessary not only to act as a participant in foreign trade activities, but also to have employees familiar with the peculiarities of procurement in Asian markets and customs clearance. The second option is convenient for medium and small companies. The customs representative will perform a range of logistics services, prepare all documents and submit the customs declaration to the authorities for clearance.
Delivery organization
Buying a product in China is only half the battle; you need to deliver it to Russia correctly and on time. There are several ways to import goods from China to the Russian Federation.
- By sea transport
. The most common type of delivery, used for large oversized cargo. Directions – ports of the Black Sea, Far East, St. Petersburg. The cost depends on the point of arrival and types of containers. Pros: low price with a large volume of cargo. Disadvantages: long delivery times (35-60 days), limited route, the need to use other transport for further travel. - By air
. Products with a limited shelf life, as well as those in high demand and expensive, are delivered. Even taking into account customs clearance, the time frame is from 3 to 5 days. Pros: delivery to any point in the Russian Federation, high speed. Cons: high cost of transportation. - Road transportation
. Transportation of expensive goods is carried out. Usually through Kazakhstan to any region of Russia. Delivery times are from 15 to 5 days. Advantages: cheaper than air transportation; faster than delivery by rail; There are no restrictions on the route, delivery to your door is possible. Disadvantages: urgent unloading; possibility of damage or theft of cargo during transportation. - Railway
. Transportation by Harbin Railway from China to any point in Russia via the Trans-Siberian Railway. Terms – 20-23 days. Pros: affordable price; good load capacity; independence from weather conditions; fairly wide geography. Cons: long delivery; high probability of cargo damage; dependence on railway communications.
Many representatives of small and medium-sized businesses turn to Chinese companies specializing in the delivery of goods to the Russian Federation. These companies are called Cargo. Product arrival time is 20-30 days. Pros: low prices; simple design; Customs clearance is carried out by the company. Cons: likelihood of loss of cargo, low likelihood of compensation for losses.
When choosing a cargo delivery method, you should determine priorities - what is most important: delivery time, cost and cargo safety factor. Large consignments of goods from China are shipped mainly by sea and by road. For small batches, air and railway transportation is used.
Finding a supplier through agents
Another way to find a supplier in China is to find an agent in China and cooperate with him. There are many agents here who will do all the necessary work for you - from visiting the factory to delivering goods to Russia. These people speak Russian, so you can communicate with them directly.
A qualified agent receives interest on shipments from the customer and from the manufacturer - this indicates his reliability and relevance. It is best to choose a person who works with small industries in the area of interest to you. Such companies have a small staff and low expenses, so the prices for goods here are very low.
How to work with such an agent? Draw up an agreement under which he arranges the export for himself. That is, you pay a person money, he buys goods at a factory for yuan and forwards them to you. You will not pay him a salary; he receives a percentage of shipments. Additional services (checking the product, organizing a trip to the factory, sending samples, etc.) are paid separately. How to find the right agent? Just turn to the Internet - these people advertise their services online.
Advantages of cooperation with an intermediary: he is in direct contact with the supplier; takes care of all the purchasing, checking and shipping of goods to the customer. The negative side is the possibility of running into an unscrupulous agent and losing your money or receiving the wrong product that you would like to see.
The lack of direct contact with the supplier and your control are also a disadvantage of this work scheme. In this case, you will not have the opportunity to participate in product design changes.
What was wrong with "The Yiwu Mediator"
Initially, we planned - our specialist, located in Yiwu, for $35 a day, at your request, would select a product at the Futien market and send you photos, price lists, business cards of 10-20 suppliers, and, if possible, send samples. But when we processed many of the applications received, reality showed that everything is not so simple. We did not take into account such an important nuance as the specifics of the work of the Chinese - especially the suppliers who are based at Futien.
Large suppliers are concentrated in the Futien market. And the best prices they offer are for large wholesale quantities. If you are ready to buy shoes, clothes, beauty products and anything at all, and the assortment at Futien is huge, in containers and wagons, these offers are for you. But for a batch of one hundred units of goods, the price will be higher. And sometimes it turned out to be more profitable to buy the same product on an electronic platform. There is a chance to negotiate a good personal discount, but this is impossible remotely - only personal communication.
Another problem we encountered is that suppliers at Futien do not have catalogs, price lists or product photos. You must see the product with your own eyes.
Despite all these difficulties, many of our clients were satisfied and left a lot of positive feedback. However, this was not exactly what they needed. That's why we refused. You can leave everything as is. But our task is to provide clients with services that best satisfy their needs. And after thinking about what alternatives we could offer, we introduced a new service - “Interpreter in Yiwu”.
How does distance shopping via the Internet differ from regular shopping?
Remote purchase of goods via the Internet means the purchase of a product under a sales contract, which is carried out between the buyer and seller on the basis of visual acquaintance with the product on the website, without direct acquaintance. That is, goods are bought on the Internet based on descriptions and photos - you cannot touch them with your hands. Well-known online sites in China offer numerous products. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of procurement for a Russian entrepreneur?
Pros:
- a wide range of different products collected on one resource;
- reduced prices, discounts due to competition;
- convenience: you can place an order without leaving your home;
- simple form of purchase and sale agreement online;
- the possibility of free or very cheap delivery;
- product and money back guarantee.
Minuses:
- the product cannot be touched with your hands or inspected in person - the result may be far from the photograph;
- discrepancy between sizes and product characteristics;
- problems with warranty repairs - the goods will have to be sent at your own expense, so many simply return the money;
- long delivery.
Typically, a Chinese online marketplace has a standard agreement, which the buyer accepts by default. However, on some resources the buyer can change the terms by agreement with the seller. Subsequently, when disputes arise, the terms and conditions set by the buyer help in resolving the matter.
