Note: This business plan, like all others in the Business Plans section, contains calculations of average prices, which may differ in your case. Therefore, we recommend that you make calculations for your business individually.
In this article we will draw up a detailed business plan for a tire workshop with calculations.
How much does it cost to open a tire shop from scratch: calculating the break-even point
It is clear that when drawing up a business plan, an entrepreneur wants to calculate everything down to the penny, including the payback of the project. However, it is difficult to predict in this industry. On the forums you can find posts in which users answered how much tire fitting costs - they claimed that they even started with 200 thousand rubles, purchasing not new equipment. And there are also entrepreneurs who have invested several million. The average investment was 700 thousand rubles.
When you analyze a ready-made tire service business plan, you understand: “exhaust” does not always correlate with investment. The workshop sells the most profitable services in October and April. On peak days, for example, when the first snow falls, a tire service station can “change shoes” for up to 60 cars per day and receive an income of up to 50 thousand rubles. But, according to many businessmen, there are no more than 20 such days a year. The rest of the time, revenue hardly justifies fixed expenses.
With a normal start, the break-even point is reached in about six months. If the payback during this period is in question, you need to think about how to leave the tire shop business with minimal costs.
Despite the instability of income, businessmen who were able to survive during the first two to three years do not regret their choice.
Market analysis
Today in Russia there are quite a few tire workshops. As a rule, they provide not only this type of service, but also others. Often tire fitting is a related service to others.
When opening your own workshop, you need to understand that competition in this business is quite strong. The niche is more than half filled. Although, of course, you need to start from the situation in a specific region or city.
Today people are increasingly buying cars. By the way, the increase in demand for tire workshop services is largely due to the increase in the number of purchased cars. Therefore, we can say that opportunities in the field exist, they are quite good, and are constantly increasing.
The main competitors will be large auto repair shops that repair cars throughout the city. They have their own customer base, which is unlikely to switch to another company to install or remove tires.
Small competitors will not be so dangerous. They don't have much fame. They can become direct rivals only if they are close.
Three components of success - a good location, quality services, advertising. It is these issues that need to be given special attention.
If we talk about potential buyers, it is important to understand that these will not just be motorists, but those who cannot or do not want to change tires themselves for a number of reasons. They could be business people, for example. The main consumers will be owners of foreign cars, of course. Although today there are enough of them to open your own tire shop and make good money from it.
Description of products and services
The tire workshop plans to provide the following services:
- Tire mounting and balancing of wheels with a diameter from 13 to 20 inches. The price for the service is from 600 to 1200 rubles for a set of four wheels.
- Removal and installation of cast and metal wheels. Price for a set of four wheels: from 40 to 120 rubles.
- Removing the tire from the rim. Service price: from 40 to 70 rubles.
- Mounting the tire on the rim. Service price: from 40 to 70 rubles.
- Check and pump up one wheel. Service price: 10 rubles.
- Installing the camera in the wheel. Service price: from 10 to 40 rubles.
- Camera repair. Service price: 50 rubles.
- Sealing one side of the wheel with a bead seal. Service price: 50 rubles.
- Wheel repair, patch/fungus. Service price: 100 rubles.
- Curing. Price of services: 112 patch - 400 rubles, 114 patch - 500 rubles, 115 patch - 600 rubles.
The tire service hours are planned to be set from 9:00 to 19:00. In the high season, for periods of increased demand (spring, autumn), the operating hours will be adjusted.

SWOT analysis
All factors influencing the activities of a tire workshop can be divided into external and internal.
External:
- Possibilities
- Constant growth in the number of consumers.
- Availability of space in the market.
- Possibility of attracting experienced craftsmen to work.
- Using subsidies to develop your own production.
- The minimum amount of necessary costs (specifically for the provision of the service).
- Threats
- Possible avalanche-like growth of competition.
- Decrease in the share of the free market (those people who have not yet decided on the choice of the place where they will receive the service).
- Seasonality of demand (one of the most serious threats).
- Increase in rental cost.
Internal:
- Strengths
- High demand for the service.
- Correctly selected service location.
- Acceptable price.
- In-depth study of marketing and pricing strategy.
- Providing quality service.
- Experienced staff.
- Weak sides
- Lack of experience in this field.
- Lack of regular customers.
- The need to start from scratch.
- Absence of any business reputation.
- Lack of services to protect yourself from losses during the off-season period.
I would like to note that it is impossible to influence external factors. There is only an option to take advantage of opportunities and minimize threats or losses from them in every possible way (in this case, it concerns seasonality).
Does it make sense to open a mobile tire service?
The mobile version of the tire replacement service assumes that the service is provided at home. But the service itself can only be beneficial if there is a stationary workshop. Thus, the mobile version can act as an additional service in a regular service.
Mobile tire fitting can be opened as an independent business, but in this case you need to build a regular clientele. The costs will be less, but the costs will be almost the same. For a mobile workshop you will need a car with the following equipment:
- balancing stand;
- stand directly for tire fitting;
- compressor;
- the same vulcanizer;
- jack;
- generator.
The car must easily accommodate all this equipment and at the same time allow the craftsmen to calmly carry out the task.
In the mobile business, the most important thing is to be on time at the right time, so the employees’ task is to make sure that the vehicle and equipment are in good working order.
Mobile tire fitting is more expensive than stationary, but clients prefer this type of service if time is especially important to them. The main clientele are wealthy people and women. It is important for them that the staff treat them politely and at the same time look neat.
A tire shop needs to advertise its service, so be sure to advertise.
Opportunity Assessment
We must not forget that providing tire fitting services is a seasonal enterprise. The peak demand is observed in April and November. The season can be considered the periods from April to June and from October to December. In the remaining two periods there will be little demand for the main service. Here you will have to reduce the number of jobs (you can, for example, hire several workers temporarily under an employment contract), as well as offer clients additional services that are not so dependent on seasonality.
The tire workshop will operate daily according to the following schedule:
Monday | 10:00 – 21:00 |
Tuesday | 10:00 – 21:00 |
Wednesday | 10:00 – 21:00 |
Thursday | 10:00 – 21:00 |
Friday | 10:00 – 21:00 |
Saturday | 09:00 – 21:00 |
Sunday | 09:00 – 21:00 |
Total 79 hours per week, 338 hours per month.
Only technical specialists will be needed for the work. Administrators are not needed, as they serve customers passing by or seeing advertisements. Just like in any other tire shops.
There will be a total of 2 work shifts, each with its own senior technician, who additionally performs responsibilities for servicing all clients (making payments, maintaining the necessary records). Naturally, the shift supervisor receives additional pay for this.
It should be noted that additional employees will be hired during the season due to higher demand for the service.
After developing a client base, it is worth thinking about opening an additional point, as well as expanding the range of services. In the future, it is even possible to retrain a tire service into a full-fledged auto repair shop. You can do this gradually by purchasing new equipment and including new services in your price list.
Choosing a service location
One of the most problematic stages of opening your own tire shop is finding a suitable location. The most “profitable” places, as a rule, are already occupied, so you have to look for additional “loopholes”. It is necessary to locate a tire service near busy highways or in the area of garage cooperatives . Such places are rarely empty, so you need to study demand and find out which workshops cannot cope with the influx of customers.
If you see a long line of people at the tire shop wanting to “change their shoes” for the winter, and at the same time some impatient drivers turn around and leave, then the demand in the area is great, so you can look for a place nearby. Just don’t try to open a workshop across the street from a competitor – it’s not the best idea. Also consider areas around car washes, gas stations and parking lots .
Please note that your tire shop should be clearly visible from the road. The room itself can be a large garage with a pit and convenient access. Also make sure there is enough parking space.
The size and furnishings of the room directly depend on what kind of clients you are going to serve. If the service is designed for VIP class clients, then the conditions must be provided accordingly. Designate a separate “waiting room” where car owners can drink tea or coffee while their car is being serviced.
Organizational and legal aspects
- The first step is to register your own company. It is better to use IP. You will have to pay a state fee of 800 rubles. The OKVED code will be 45.2 - Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles. Don't forget to indicate it when completing the documents.
- If you accept bank card payments from clients, then to do this you need to open a bank account.
- According to the Federal Law “On Licensing of Certain Types of Activities,” tire fitting services are not classified as licensed types of activities . Therefore, you do not need to obtain a license. I would like to remind you that quite recently all tire shops were subject to licensing. However, this order was abolished.
- If you turn to the All-Russian Classifier of Services to the Population (OKUN), you can find out that tire fitting work is classified as household services. This gives the entrepreneur the opportunity to pay UTII (with the exception of Moscow). He can also use the simplified tax system “Income” 6% or the simplified tax system “Income minus expenses” 6-15% (the rate is determined depending on the region). When choosing UTII, an entrepreneur can make payments without a cash register. Remember that you make your choice yourself, based on your own income, expenses and other factors.
- It is necessary to notify Rospotrebnadzor about the start of its activities (according to Resolution No. 584 of July 16, 2009). This must be done before starting work. In case of failure to comply with this requirement, the individual entrepreneur pays a fine in the amount of 3,000 - 5,000 rubles, and the LLC - up to 20,000 inclusive. Such a notification will replace the conclusion of the SES, fire supervision and environmental authorities. You don't need to receive them.
- Carefully study the requirements of fire authorities. Ensure they are followed. To do this, you can study the corresponding order of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation No. 313 dated June 18, 2003. According to it, a person responsible for fire safety must be appointed at the enterprise. He must undergo appropriate training and receive a supporting document. A fire alarm must be installed on the territory of the enterprise, and special fire extinguishing equipment must also be located there. The premises must have an approved evacuation plan.
- Read the Resolution of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development of the Russian Federation, which was approved on May 12, 2003. It contains all the Interindustry rules on labor protection in road transport.
- Don't forget to register your cash register with the Tax Service before starting work. If you use check printing machines (CHP) when choosing UTII (although you can do without CPM), you do not need to register the device.
- You will need a formal lease agreement.
- Take care to conclude an appropriate agreement with the electricity supply services.
It is best to locate your tire shop near major transport junctions or highways. Busy city highways are also a good choice. The proximity to a gas station or parking lot will also certainly increase the number of customers. The main thing is to pay attention that there are no other services nearby.
Most likely, the room will look like a garage or actually be one.
Seasonality of business and other nuances
The largest percentage of profits occurs in spring and autumn , when it is time to “change shoes”.
Part of the money received is used to cover expenses associated with tire service activities in winter and summer. Some entrepreneurs even suspend operations in the summer, but this is not an entirely optimal solution. Troubles such as a punctured wheel, deformed rims, or complete tire wear, which requires you to buy and install new tires, can happen at any time. Of course, in the summer there are no such queues as in the spring and autumn, but competition at this time of year is significantly reduced, because some services are temporarily closed.
If you decide to open your tire shop from scratch, pay attention to a number of other features:
- the profitability of the business largely depends on the location (we will talk about this in more detail below);
- opening a small tire shop does not require much initial investment;
- The owner of a tire shop can work under one of several taxation systems (“simplified”, “imputed” or patent). Each of these reporting methods has its pros and cons. Thus, under the patent system, you cannot hire more than 15 workers. The difference between UTII is that the amount of tax does not depend on the profit received, while the number of employees is taken into account when calculating the amount payable to the budget. Those who work in simplified jobs pay taxes depending on the profit received;
- You need to decide what kind of tire shop you want to open. The most common type is the stationary option. Such auto repair shops provide a full range of services related to the operation of tires and wheels. There are also mobile tire shops that provide on-site services to any specified location;
- among other things, there are services that work with passenger vehicles, trucks or specialized ones (rare and sports cars).
If you're wondering how much it costs to open a pawn shop, read this informational article. Here you will find a detailed description of a business idea for breeding rabbits.
Marketing plan
It is very important to place a workshop sign above or next to the salon. If you are near a highway, you can also post signs accordingly.
In this case, advertising on the Internet or in the media will not be so relevant. The cost of the service is not that high. It is unlikely that anyone will want to go to the other end of the city to change tires.
It’s worth trying to hand out leaflets at nearby gas stations, parking lots, and parking lots. In short, you need to work live with potential clients, that is, with drivers.
You shouldn't set the price too low. Firstly, it will not allow you to make a normal profit. Secondly, people in such matters look at the price secondarily. But, of course, the cost must be acceptable. Setting the price at the market average level will be relevant.
Business promotion
No business project is complete without drawing up a detailed marketing plan. The purpose of writing this section is to reduce risks and attract potential clients.
To increase sales, a standard marketing system can be used:
- provision of additional services;
- original car service banner design;
- hiring only women;
- discount cards and discounts for regular customers.
Calculation of projected income
The average cost of replacing all tires with balancing, inflation and other details costs motorists 800-1600 rubles, depending on the region, range of services, wheel size and location of work. We will calculate income at the rate of 1000 rubles per replacement. This is an average figure that will vary depending on the tire size and service package.
During the season, you can increase the price, then the average cost will be 1200 rubles.
It is also impossible not to take into account minor services for tire repair (removing punctures, cuts, etc.), tire inflation, etc.
Period | January - March, July - September | April – June, October – December |
Average cost of service | 1,000 rubles | 1,200 rubles |
Occupancy percentage | 35% | 60% |
Number of services provided (per worker) per month | 177 | 304 |
Number of workers per shift | 1 | 2 |
Total monthly revenue | 177,000 rubles | 729,600 rubles |
Calculations are given for 1 month in each period.
The average time for replacing wheels is 40 minutes by one specialist.
Which taxation system to choose for tire fitting
The organizational and legal form of the tire workshop will be individual entrepreneurship. We consider this OPF to be the most suitable for this business. The initiator of the project is I.V. Petrov.
It is planned to use a patent taxation system as a tax regime. This is a very convenient tax regime that eliminates the payment of income tax, VAT and property tax. In addition, the use of a patent exempts from the obligation to maintain accounting records. The annual cost of a patent for tire fitting will be 32,000 rubles.
Currently, practical activities have begun to implement the project:
- Individual entrepreneurship has been registered with the local Federal Tax Service;
- A lease agreement was concluded for a private land plot of 120 m2. The site is located in close proximity to a large parking lot. The monthly rent for the plot will be 18 thousand rubles.
- A company has been found that manufactures and supplies ready-made modular buildings for tire fitting on a turnkey basis.
Production plan
The premises were mentioned above. The best thing to do is to find the right garage in the right location. Of course, it will have to be refurbished. The repair will be quite economical. Its price will also include the costs of bringing the premises into compliance with fire safety standards (alarms, fire extinguishers, evacuation plan).
You will need a large amount of equipment. These will be various tire machines, balancing stands, compressors, jacks, vulcanizers, etc. It is better to immediately purchase high-quality equipment. It is worth paying attention to well-known companies from Germany, Italy and the USA, as well as domestic equipment (Sivik, for example). It is these countries that produce equipment that meets all standards. Remember that you need to provide two workers with everything they need. But in general, for a small workshop, 1 piece of basic equipment (tire stand, balancing machine, compressor) is enough.
The only furniture you will need is armchairs for visitors, a table and chair for a worker, and storage boxes.
In addition to large equipment, workers will also need small tools necessary for fast and high-quality work.
Especially at the beginning, you will have to spend a lot of money on advertising.
It's worth considering designing your own uniform. It is better to order durable items from special workshops. It is worth putting the name or logo of the company on the clothes.
Stocks of raw materials will help to avoid situations when something is missing in the tire workshop.
If the entrepreneur has chosen the simplified tax system, he will also need to purchase a cash register. There is no need for UTII.
It is best to hire auto mechanics with appropriate education and experience. The shift supervisor receives 35% of the income minus taxes and insurance contributions. Temporary workers receive 25%.
Workers also ensure that the workplace complies with sanitary standards.
Analysis and selection of equipment
Initially, I was counting on buying simple equipment made in China. There are quite a lot of brands of it. To purchase the equipment, I chose one Russian supplier of factory-made Chinese equipment, which had an acceptable price and a factory warranty.
From the list of equipment they sell, I chose:
- tire changing machine (beading machine) – 68,000 rubles.
- balancing machine – 78,000 rubles.
- compressor - 52,000 rubles.
- rolling jacks, 2 units. – 8400 rubles.
- vulcanizer – 5600 rubles.
- consumables for tire repair from the equipment supplier - 11,000 rubles.
This equipment cost me 223 thousand . Delivery of equipment by a transport company from Moscow to Rostov-on-Don cost 18,000 rubles.
It was a little more than the budget I had planned. I barely had enough money to buy an instrument and pay rent for the first month of work. In addition, it was necessary to prepare the wiring for the premises and make an advertising sign.
I left this supplier as a backup option and continued my search.
I read a lot of reviews about various equipment, analyzed and tried to choose something of acceptable quality and affordable price.
But my searches came down to about the same amount and in the end I didn’t find anything. I was about to postpone the implementation of the idea for some time in order to collect another 100,000 rubles, but I decided to study the secondary market.
There were offers on the secondary market, but the equipment was too worn out. This applies to my home region and two neighboring ones - Stavropol and Krasnodar territories. I expanded my search area and studied the Moscow market for secondary tire fitting equipment.
In Zelenograd, near Moscow, I found an excellent offer. Two machines from a renowned company producing equipment for car repair and maintenance were sold there.
This equipment was sold at a bargain price, but in the photo it looked like new. These machines are shown in the photographs.
To begin with, I contacted the sellers and asked them to make a video for me about the operation of the machines. They fulfilled my request. In the video, the machines worked properly, and there were no complaints about them.
But I still had a huge mistrust, and I decided to go to the place where the equipment was sold. Arriving at the place, I met with the seller. He completely sold out the equipment from the tire workshop. The reason for this was the low profitability of the establishment.
After inspecting the equipment and making sure that it was in good working order and still had sufficient life, I started bidding. As a result, I purchased the necessary equipment at prices:
- tire changing machine – 35,000 rubles.
- balancing machine – 48,000 rubles.
- compressor - 32,000 rubles.
- rolling jacks, hydraulic 4 units. – 1000 rubles.
- vulcanizer – 7,000 rubles.
- container for checking tires - 3000 rubles.
- assorted sets of wrenches (heads, sockets) – 5,000 rubles.
- construction hair dryer – 1000 rubles.
- hoses, connections for the compressor and crew operator - 3,000 rubles.
- sledgehammers, hammers, pry bars, shoes (stoppers for cars) - 2000 rubles.
- pneumatic wrench with a set of heads - 4000 rubles.
- advertising sign – 1000 rubles.
- consumables and other small items – 5,000 rubles.
I bought almost all the equipment from this workshop for a total of 150,000 rubles. All I had to do was transport it to my region. To do this, I used the services of a transport company.
They sent a car with loaders to the place, brought it all to their warehouse and packed it. Almost all the small parts went into the water container and the machines were packed in a hard packaging.
The services of a transport company with cargo collection, packaging and delivery to the site cost me 22,000 rubles.
The total amount from the purchase of all this equipment was 172,000 rubles .
I benefited greatly from this transaction. Looking ahead, I will say that the best option when starting a business is to buy used equipment.
With a small budget, it will be difficult for a beginner to buy everything he needs. Moreover, on the secondary market you can find equipment from good manufacturers at an affordable price. I have seen this from my own experience.
I bought the rest of the equipment from the original list (high pressure washer, etc.) in my city.
Organizational plan
Individual entrepreneur registration | 800 rubles |
Room renovation | 100,000 rubles |
Equipment | 250,000 rubles |
Furniture | 45,000 rubles |
Necessary equipment, tools | 20,000 rubles |
35,000 rubles | |
Uniforms for workers | 20,000 rubles |
Creation of raw materials reserves | 8,000 rubles |
Total: | 478,800 rubles |
Automatic or semi-automatic?
If you cannot decide which equipment to buy - manual or automatic - then we advise you to immediately buy automatic, especially if you are going to work with a small team at first.
With automatic equipment, tire replacement and repair can be done by one or two workers. Of course, an automatic machine will cost you more than a semi-automatic one, but the price will pay for itself with a large turnover of work.
Types of tire changing machines
Financial plan
We will make the calculation for each month separately.
Period | January - March, July - September | April – June, October – December |
Monthly income | 177,000 rubles | 729,600 rubles |

Renting premises | 25,000 rubles | 25,000 rubles |
Wage | 61,950 rubles | 437,760 rubles |
Utility costs (electricity, water supply) | 7,500 rubles | 9,000 rubles |
Maintaining strict reporting forms (paper, print) | 500 rubles | 1,000 rubles |
Raw materials | 6,000 rubles | 10,000 rubles |
20,000 rubles | 15,000 rubles
Detergents, household supplies | 1,000 rubles | 1,500 rubles |
Total costs: | 121,950 rubles | 498,260 rubles |
Total profit before tax: | 55,050 rubles | 231,340 rubles |
Tax (UTII) depending on the region and area of the premises | 1,000 rubles | 1,900 rubles |
Net profit | 54,050 rubles | 229,440 rubles |
Profitability | 31,1% | 31,45% |
The table shows the average value of UTII per month. Remember that it is paid quarterly. We have provided an approximate value. It may vary depending on region, year and other conditions. Remember that the amount can be partially reduced by compensating for insurance premiums. We used a special online calculator to calculate UTII. You can also use the simplified tax system. The figures are given taking into account the reduction of UTII by part of the amount of insurance premiums.
The project will pay off in 4 months on average.
How to advertise a tire service
The most effective advertising for a tire shop is usually local advertising, which is distributed near the workshop itself. Distributing booklets and advertising in elevators and nearby service points for cars that do not have their own tire service are effective.
It would be a good idea to register on message boards and social networks, but such advertising will generate significantly less traffic. It would be great if you provide clients with the option of recording via the Internet. Website builders have ready-made blocks that will make it easy to organize such an opportunity for clients.
Secrets of the auto business. Is it possible to make money from tire fitting?
Of all types of automotive business tied to “place and time” (availability of location and seasonality), tire service seems to be one of the most affordable investments. You bought equipment and tools, bought a trailer, parked it in a busy place - and you cut money in bundles. Only, obviously, not for long - in the fall and spring. What to do the rest of the time? And how much do you still need to pay to “enter” this business? And in general, is it worth doing this?
Many people are captivated by the lack of the need to spend millions on opening. Again, this is a service that is always in demand. The client with certain problems, even if not en masse, should contact us all year round. True, for this you first need to decide on a place of work.
Good location or advertising budget
The ideal option is to place it in crowded areas or on roads with heavy traffic. On an intercity highway (usually next to a cafe) or at a car market, near a service center, or a parking lot. Theoretically, no-man's land, that is, land owned by the city, can be rented. But the labor intensity of this process is hardly worth the result. You are installing a non-trade 6x2. In addition, the running places will probably be occupied. Do you need slow-moving ones?
Joining some service structure is also not always a realistic option. Universal service stations located on the highways most likely already offer this service. Many urban residents also do not hesitate to make money from tire fitting during the season. They will not be allowed into their territory.
There remain car markets, parking lots, and garage cooperatives. Sometimes you can rent a room. You will have to count on at least 700–1000 rubles per square meter. Sometimes you can get into someone’s “garden” with your “home.” In this case, rent will naturally be cheaper. How much? It all depends on the region, city. In not too large regional centers it may be 350 rubles, in smaller towns - less than three hundred.
But climbing onto the backs of shopping centers or industrial sites will cost you more. The rule here is: “they see, they go.” If the tire shop is “hidden” from potential customers, only advertising will help. On social networks, on popular sites, in search engines. You can spend up to 50 thousand rubles a month on it. And it’s not at all a fact that they will leave in a month or two. There is a well-known example where investments in advertising began to be recouped only after two years. A regular customer came and word of mouth began to work. By the way, in our case it is the real engine of trade. But, as you understand, it is directly related to the established reputation, which depends on the quality of services. In a word, hiding out of sight and immediately counting on good earnings is naive.
Minimum Required
In general, the best option for a successful start is a trailer placed in a “crowded” place. The offer of various cabins is now rich. A somewhat insulated trailer can be purchased for 100 thousand.
Sometimes even cheaper. Moreover, they offer products aimed specifically at tire fitting. True, as is the case with cars, often what is inexpensive is empty in terms of “complete set”. There will be no electrical preparation, normal “vandal-proof” doors, bars or blinds on the windows.
If similar products are not produced in your city, you will have to pay extra for delivery and wait. Used trailers are also in stock. You can buy it for 25–50 thousand. But here there is a risk of burdening yourself with unnecessary construction work. First of all, to strengthen the floor. Tire fitting equipment is heavy, and not every cabin designed for everyday use can withstand it.
Equipment... The main unit is a tire changer. There are used ones on sale, but it is unlikely to purchase them before the season. And at any other time you need to look at the condition - in most cases you will find yourself barely alive. A new stand costs from 50 thousand. But the rule here is true: the more expensive, the better. Firstly, because during the season it will be plowed non-stop. Secondly, they have certain limitations. They concern the bending rigidity of the “leg” - the main mounting element (photo below).
It takes on the entire load, however, it is made of almost 2 mm steel. Sometimes he is simply physically unable to handle the wheel and presses himself against the rim of the disk, removing paint and even metal from it. In addition, it damages the tire bead. Tire fitters familiar with various stands note that a more or less decent machine “starts” at 100 thousand. True, for speed and convenience of work, you need to buy a “third hand” - a manipulator that helps to dismantle and mount tires without damaging the rim and tire bead. This is still about 50 thousand rubles.
A domestic Sivik stand of entry level and good quality for 58 thousand rubles. The Chinese Flying for 123 thousand is also quite good and, moreover, equipped with a “third hand”. Italian Nordberg. The latter is on a different level - one of the best stands, capable of handling all wheels up to a diameter of 24 inches. But it costs more than half a million. By the way, with regard to budget machines, you don’t need to take literally the declared ability to work with large-diameter disks. You can safely take away two inches from Chinese and domestic ones
All tire changing stands operate on pneumatic drives, and therefore a good compressor is needed. Let's say, with a power of 4 kW and a capacity of 400 l/min. From 60 thousand. There is an air purification system attached to it. Another five thousand. A simple balancing machine - from 45 thousand rubles. The one with a screen and voice guidance - from 150 thousand. Vulcanizer for tubes, the so-called C-shaped (from 7 thousand) and U-shaped for tires (from 18). Workbench (from 7). Plus a couple of hydraulic rolling jacks (5 thousand each), another tool and additional cones for the balancing machine (all will cost 30–40 thousand).
And on top of all this there are also “consumables” - sealant, weights, etc. It can easily cost 30 thousand rubles for a season.
Although most tire fitters save money - they reuse the weights (they glue them with double-sided tape, they fix the staples on the padded weights). Instead of sealant, they use a well-known “life hack” - raw rubber dissolved in gasoline, and sometimes even mounted with laundry soap. But if we ignore the costs of consumables, together with a trailer of 100 thousand, it turns out to be more than 300 thousand rubles. And we are talking about the cheapest machines that can fail at peak loads. Let's add 50 thousand for one, 30 for the other. A couple of tens of thousands for video surveillance (one camera inside, two outside), which experienced tire fitters recommend installing. It's already over 400 thousand rubles. Let's not forget about current expenses. Electricity (per trailer about 5 thousand per month). Disposal of used tires (fines are possible for uncollected waste; removal - as agreed, sometimes free, sometimes about 3,500 rubles per ton of tires). Imputed tax, which depends on the area and other expenses. Finally, employee salaries, which usually amount to 50% of the cost of services.
Hard to find, hard to hold
Of course, it is better to start such a business by investing not only money, but also your hands. But during the period of “re-shoeing”, at least one assistant is still needed. Where can I get one and what kind of contingent goes to tire fitting?
For owners of such structures, this is a sore point. They say that most applicants, when trying to get a job in a tire shop, reason according to the principle “at least here.” That is, we tried a lot of places, but it didn’t work out anywhere. And to glue and “re-shoe” the “rubber” - well, they should definitely take it. It’s good if such a potential employee is a former car mechanic. There is an understanding of what should work and how. For example, where to place the jack in order to save what is left of the rotten thresholds. Or how to apply a patch. Finally, if necessary, sort out the equipment.
Most of those applying are not able to perform basic things, not to mention some complex operations (editing disks, argon welding, etc.). But they have problems with alcohol and with the law.
At the same time, workshop owners often reciprocate such (and any!) work. After the season, dumping an employee who is entitled to an average of 50% of the cost of work is a common thing for many. Seasonality also hinders close relationships between employer and employee. When the incomes of both fall several times, it is difficult to expect samurai devotion from the latter. To retain a responsible subordinate, you need to provide him with year-round work. This will not happen without the provision of related services.
Additional services: not cheap and not obvious
A tire service, alas, is not a service station with its ability to expand the range of services almost unlimitedly. There is initially a lack of “production capacity” here. Nevertheless, this service also has something to offer in addition to the main profile. Let's go over specific positions.
Re-studding of tires. Also a seasonal procedure, in addition, it is several times less massive than changing tires. We have already talked about it in detail. As for investments, to purchase the minimum set you need 50–60 thousand. And advertising! At least informing regular customers that it is now being implemented.
Storage of customer tires. Definitely not suitable for tire stations located in trailers. But even if there is a larger room, you need to think a hundred times whether to occupy it in this way. Unless you sell tires and have free space. There is a lot of free space - on average, one set takes up about 0.4 cubic meters. At the same time, it is practically impossible to make money on such a service. The obvious “income” is only in linking the client to your workshop.
Editing disks. A good machine for argon arc welding costs from 60 thousand, a simple machine for straightening cast wheels - from 150. In other words, this is the next stage in the development of “our” business, when several seasons have been successfully completed and we can invest in development. The problem here is that it is difficult to find a good argon welder who will also agree to work in a tire shop. But if one is found, then this direction can be developed.
Argon arc welding. Many advanced tire repair shops, having hired an “argon specialist” into their team, do not limit themselves to just restoring wheels. They offer welding of all light-alloy elements found in the car: radiators, transmission housings, pallets, even blocks and intake/exhaust manifolds. Yes, in general, everything that is made of non-ferrous metals and stainless steel.
Thus, in order to earn money year-round and decently, it is still necessary to offer more than one tire service and tire repair.
Konstantin Butakov
General Director of Rezaton LLC, experience in the specialty for more than five years
— Perhaps 80% of all newly opened tire shops are structures for one season. Selling your own car, buying a trailer and equipment. At the end of the season, you can earn money, break even, or go into minus. But even in the first case, there is little chance that the owner will remain in his business. After all, the euphoria from impressive earnings is followed by such stagnation that it’s time to dismiss the staff and close down. Moreover, the “summer” season is two and a half months. And “winter” is only a month. After these hot weeks, earnings can easily drop tenfold. And workers will begin to think about where to go. And you need to earn money yourself, and also pay rent and taxes. Therefore, the vast majority of such businessmen put the point up for sale. There are a lot of similar announcements on specialized websites at the end of November-December.
To come seriously and for a long time, you need to invest much more than 400–500 thousand. Purchase high-quality equipment and tools that will be able to work for more than one season. Understand that even expensive machines require maintenance and repair. Set aside a budget for advertising and services that will help you stay afloat in the off-season.
Tire shops located on intercity highways are not so tied to the season. It has its own condition of existence. In addition to “passenger” equipment, they must have “cargo” equipment. And this is a completely different order of investment. A normal tire changing machine costs from 300 thousand, a German or Italian one - from 600 thousand. Balancing - from 150 thousand, vulcanizer - from 120, etc.
Our company started out selling tires and wheels. At some point, we got tired of transporting wheels for dismantling/installation to other companies and bought the first stand with a compressor. And so it started to spin. I now understand what a tire shop is. Additional services and regular customers satisfied with the quality!
In a word, you can make money. Unfortunately, this is a highly seasonal service with variable income and expenses. But if you asked me if I would undertake to organize such a structure again from scratch, I would answer that no. And since we have already started, we will develop further.
Stages of opening a tire shop
Each stage of organizing and starting a tire business must be planned in accordance with specific deadlines, so you can calculate in advance when the enterprise will reach the level of self-sufficiency and when you can count on receiving a stable profit. In relation to the timing of organizing a workshop, the stages are as follows:
Stages | Execution conditions | Deadlines |
Start of the project | 1 – 2 year
Conclusion of an investment agreement | 1 month project | First 30 banking days |
Receiving credit funds | Availability of a mandatory package of documents | 1 month |
Entry into the state register, registration with administrative and tax authorities | Concluded investment agreement | From 1 to 30 calendar days |
Selecting a location, preparing documentation | Preliminary work | 1 month |
Purchase of equipment | Conclusion of an investment agreement | Up to 30 calendar days |
Equipment installation | Receiving investment funds | Up to 30 calendar days |
Hiring employees | Production activities | Up to 30 calendar days |
Training | The end of the stage of organizing the production process | Up to 30 days |
Marketing campaign | 30 calendar days | Up to 360 calendar days |
End of the project | 12 – 24 months |
These stages, designed for a total of 24 months, are worth considering in more detail. After the main features of the domestic tire market have been studied, you should begin preparing registration documents and registration of the chosen form of business activity.

Disc straightening machine
A wheel straightening machine is also a necessary piece of equipment in the auto repair business. With its help, you can eliminate damage to car rims - dents, restore the geometry of the coating. Used when radial or axial runout occurs. This equipment should be present in a tire service, since it is much more profitable for the car owner to repair the disc than to purchase a new one.
This device can completely and without a trace eliminate disk distortion. Repair occurs quickly and does not require additional equipment. The principle of restoring the blade is to simultaneously roll the outer and inner sides.
The machine acts exclusively on deformed areas. The equipment for straightening discs has a hydraulic cylinder, the necessary attachments and other elements. During rolling, strong pressure is applied to the distorted blade, due to which the disk returns to its original state.
The disc restoration process destroys its top layer, so the product needs a new protective coating.
